6.5-06 vs 6.5 Rem Mag

Getting the 6.5x284 to feed out of a Long action is a sucker compared to just using a 6.5-06. And Lapua '06 brass is awesome (and cheap really), and 6.5-06 AI, you get to use Norm...I mean Nosler 280 AI brass.

Using a long action for a 6.5-284 has it's good points too.
Proper head stamped brass
seat the bullets out where they should be and
Hungry has a good set of dies for sale on the EE right now.

Who cares about headstamps? I have a .284 and had no problems seating 168gr Amax's over RL19 for 2850 in a short action.
The feeding and the stupid expensice brass is an issue.
I still think a 6.5-06 AI and off to the races.

Actually, in terms of action length, the best set up for 'cats on the 284 is the intermediate Mauser length actions (the x57 length). You can seat the bullets right out where you want them, no problem. Not many modern actions built along those lines sadly. Next best bet is to use one of the longer "short" actions, Model 70 etc, that allow longer COL. FWIW. - dan

I have two Swedes and like you I wanted more zip so I went with the 6.5mmRM. I'm still waiting on the barrel. Remington still makes brass and Epps sells it. I got the dies on e-bay for $45.00 including shipping. From the load data I have been able to find the 6.5mm Rm will give you more zip then the 06but not by much. However if your going to change from the Swede why not take it to the max. I bought some Reloader 17 and can't wait to see what kind of load I can work up with that. I 'm having a Stevens 200 in 7mm RM rebarreled.

I don't disagree with the guys who say the 06 would be easier, it is true. Far more load data and the bolt face will work and dies are easier to come by as well.
