Thinking about building a 6.5-06 on either a Ruger Hawkeye M77 30-06 or a Winchester M70 30-06 both lefty’s. I had a T3 in 6.5x55 but now have a lefty M70 in 7x57, with 6.5x55 and 7x57 being relatively similar it’s got me thinking about a 6.5-06. Who has/had a 6.5-06 and what’s your experience with them?

Fine cartridge which is easy to work with. I have built a couple dozen, I suppose. It will give about 150 fps over the 6.5x55, at similar pressures. 140's at about 2940, using 4831. 120's at about 3100. With slower powders, you may be able to bump performance up a bit and 3000 with 140's is doable. Brass is easily formed and the cartridge will function well in a 30/06 action.

What twist rate is every one using? Brass forming is best done necking up brass ie 25-06 vs necking down 30-06 brass? Has anyone used a 129 grain Nosler LRAB in a 6.5-06?

I've built a couple 6.5-06's and find them to be good shooters but they aren't a really speedy cartridge compared to other 6.5's with smaller cases. The last one I did I bought a new in the white 98 mauser 6.5x55 barrel from tradex and chopped the threads off and installed it in a remington. I was surprised how very accurate it is making it out of pieces. I use all 30-06 brass without trouble.

My 1-8 twist Win 70 FWT will shoot the 156gr Sako bullet but the Hornady 160gr tips. The miltary 38/96's with the 1-7.25" shoot either?

I've got a message into Mystic Precision to see what a new barrel will run me. I was thinking about a gain twist from Ron Smith but I believe he only does stainless barrels and I want a blued barrel.

Buddy has a 6.5 - 270, he likes it .. not throated for longer bullets, , ..
I went with the 6.5 284 norma .. match grade dies available, 1/8 twist ... loves long high B.C. bullets ...

26 nosler would be flat also

Where you at the Lethbridge gun show this year? I had a bit of a conversation with someone about this topic, curious if it may have been you? If it was you snagged one of the Tikka M55 magazines I was there to buy. ;)
