6.5-06

I've been thinking of building a 6.5-06 myself. It wouldn't happen for awhile, but I have a beauty Tikka M65 - .30-06 that would be a great donor. Seems like a nice round.

You are offering a 6.5 barrel to sell or you are explaining that a blued stainless barrel is possible. Either way I’m interested. How does a blued stainless barrel work? Is it blued in the same method as a CM barrel? Is the colour the same?

Factory 1964 Remington M700 7MM Rem Mag Factory SS barrel is Blued ! I think you need to call a GUN BLUER and ask ! Internet search shows Blued SS Barrels - RJ

Yes it is the same method but different chemicals & temperature. I have not done it but have seen it done and had a couple rifles done.

Many years back I was given a Rem 700 in 7mm Mag, needed a bit of tidying up, so sent it away to be reblued. Gunsmith rung me and said he couldn't get the blue to "stick" to the barrel. On investigation we found that Remington had for a number of years made their magnum barrels out of SS, and iron oxide them over the top so they could be blued to look like a normal blued barrel. We wiped the bluing residue off the barrel and just used it. Apparently 800+ wet and dry to prepare the barrel prior to bluing was enough to remove the thin coating of iron oxide.

Where you at the Lethbridge gun show this year? I had a bit of a conversation with someone about this topic, curious if it may have been you? If it was you snagged one of the Tikka M55 magazines I was there to buy. ;)

Not me. I haven't been to a gun show for several year. They are always in conflict with matches.

No worries, I had a great time with whomever (?) it was.

Not meaning to hijack the thread, still interested in what others may have to add to the topic.

I'm burning one up right now,,, its a good cartridge with very little recoil,,, but i dont think the barrel is going to last much longer...

I come from the 30/06 and 308 shooting catagory,,, so ill switch back to either of them when the rifling is done...

A bit better barrle life is good in my books...

Ive been runing the 140gr bullets with a 1:8 twist,,, Remmy left hand 700 bdl with a contour 2.8 bob jury medium heavy barrel...

Shes deffinaly a shooter...

D_P, I don't know why your throats are burning any worse than a 270 Winchester would. We're only talking about .013 difference.

Are you doing a lot of shooting with this rifle???

The rifles I've had didn't give me any unusual throat wear. Mind you, I never shot more than a couple of thousand rounds out of the Remington or the Winchester.

Interesting ! Yea 62-70 Mags were SS - My Buddy had a 270 Win in a M700 and it was SS also so NOT just magnums ! RJ

Throat erosion occurs more as things get into over bore...

Example...

308 is at 0.835,,, that low for OB...

7mm Mag at 1.300,,, thats nasty OB for the size of case to bullet,,, a 270 is worse,,, 6.5/300 weatherby it real bad...
1.500 or 1.700,,, any thing over 1 burns barrels fast...

Google Over Bore cartridges if you want to see the list...

30/30,,, 45/70 barrels last along time....

Cheers from Don

I have a 25-06 with over 4000 rounds down the tube. Accuracy is fine and the throat has pushed forward about .050 from my reloading records. Maybe your fussier than I am???

I fully understand the issue with overbore capacity rounds. Been chasing it for over 50 years. With the new powders available it's not nearly the issue it used to be. You compared two cartridges that are akin to apples/oranges. The 6.5-06 would be almost identical to the 270Win and not as bad as the 25-06.

All of this changes when loads are at maximum or over pressure.

I'm expecting the 25-06 to outlast me. Mostly because I don't shoot it much any longer.

Still, the BR shooters will often scrap a barrel long before the throat erodes more than .030. I was always to frugal.

Going back to twist rate: I noticed in Nosler 8 that they used 1-9" twist barrels for all 6.5 cartridges other than 6.5 Grendel, 6.5 Creedmoor and 26 Nosler which used 1-8" twist barrels. Why would that be?

What is everyone's experience with E R Shaw barrels for hunting and some longer range targets? I have been offered a new old stock blank on trade .264 barrel 1-9" twist.

Just a note on twists, I sent you a message about Ron making Chrome moly barrels so you can blue them!
And talk o Ron about twist, he’ll fix you up if you tell him the weight of bullet you’ll be shooting!
The 6.5-06 is a top shelf gun with his gain twist barrels!
Later sst
