I have an old Savage J-class rifle set up with a 28" shelin select match barrel. The thing shoots better than I am able. I shoot

140gr A-Max
50.5gr of H-4831
Fed 210m primers
Lapua cases

The problem I am having is this load only goes at 2840fps with a single digit extreme spread. If I try to go faster if goes for s%*t. I feel this cartridge in that barrel is capable of more speed. Am I crazy? So a powder change is in order. The question is which direction do I need to go? Should I go with a quicker powder like H-4350 or go slower like H-1000? What do you guys think? Thanks in advance.

i am running 139 lapua's in norma brass with 50.7 grains of H4831sc with Fed bench rest primers. I am getting 2855fps with a ES of 7fps. When i was running around the amount powder you are it was approching 2925. These rounds are out of a Savage model 12 BR.

I know a friend of mine found the sweet spot at around 50.5 and then again around 52.0gr. He says that the 6.5 like to travel around 2850 to 2950.
The only down side to running it this fast is it is hard on barrels. That is why I run 50.7 so i get more life out of my barrel. As well you still only need around 28 MOA to get to a grand.

Is there a reason that you want to get over 2840? if it groups nice just use it.

I just felt this was more like 260 velocity. Guys are claiming they run this case closer to 3000 fps with 140 grainers. This is my first crack at this cartridge so I wasn't sure so just thought I'd ask. Thanks for the replies.

That is about as fast as you want to go with a 6.5-284 anyway. you can go faster, but you are looking a gun with a really short accurate barrel life. the hotter you go the less life you'll have (start at about 1000 rounds and go backwards from there) and people that shoot them with vld bullts that are so sensitive to seating depth actually have to change seating depth every 100 rounds. shooting a hotter load with more pressure will only make that worse. give some of the berger 140 hybrids a try. about he best 6.5 bullet there is and less seating depth sensitive.

I get better STD Dev with 4350 ? however what ever works for you is best

I thought about trying it but I had five pounds of h-4831 and it worked so well that its hard to change. Now that I know that my speed is about right its time to get a start on burning up that barrel.
