Hello, so I'm putting together a semi lightweight 6.5-284 Norma. Rifle will be used as an all around hunting rifle. Just looking at anyone's personal experience hunting with this round. Bullets you used, powder, or even factory loaded. Just mostly curious on overall thoughts in general.

Nice long action round
Similar to 270 win performance now that they're starting to build higher bc bullets for it.
I shoot a 130 gr bullet about 3000 fps. Killed and antelope with it once.
If you build one, find a 298 neck so you can run lapua brass without neck turning.

over all thoughts...

requires a long action for best results
the short fat case may have more feeding problems over a longer case as the -06 case
factory ammo is not as common as other cartridges
it will perform very well

If I were building on a long action, I would prefer the 6.5-06. If on a short action, I would prefer the 260. In an unaltered Mauser 98, the 6.5x55 is my preference. These are good, practical choices. Having said this, I have built a few 6.5-284's and my own 6.5mm hunting rifle is a 256 Newton. Our choices don't always have to make sense.

using a long action for a SA cartridge turned me off, waste of space. It used to be a pretty trendy cartridge but nowdays people seem to talk about the 6.5CM more.

OAL of 3.1" not that much wasted

My .270 will push a 140 at 3000 fps from a 22" barrel... don't see the advantage if you're using a long action.

No real world advantage, but the problem with the 270 is it's terribly boring

Factory lapua brass is the biggest attraction for me. I would never build a 6.5 CM because of this.

Lapua makes 6.5 Creedmoor brass for 2017

Just finished a 6.5-284 build. It's on a 700 long action. I had a hard time getting my head around the short cartridge in a long action. Once I worked up my first hand loads I realized just how long the 140s makes the coal of this round. It fills the mag up nicely. My rifle feeds awesome. Shoots great with mild recoil. I've put 140 accubonds and 139 lapua scenars through it out to 600yds, the 6.5-284 is really good in the wind! I'm loading with H483SC over book max with lapua brass and Fed 210. I haven't been excited about a cartridge for awhile but the 6.5-284 Norma has my attention now! Rifle finished at around 6.5 lb

It's the middle rifle

With the Tikka I would go with the 6.5-06. The same performance without the hassle of trying to alter the mag for the fatter case. I had the 6.5 284 built on a short action with a 22" barrel and was getting 3000 with 140 gr bullets.
