6.5 carcano reloading data

Using the data from the sheet that came with my lee die's, for the 160gr RN , I went with 38gr of H380(only one on the list I can get here). This is half way from the min load and max. Set to factory specs, they "should be fine". BUT, first 2 rounds didn't just blow the primers, they vanished without a trace and pockets are enlarged .005". it's a sweet little Cavalry Carbine, hate to have to feed it only factory loads.

Anyone have proven loads that I can use ??

What other rifle powders can you get locally?

These over pressure loads were with 28gr of powder. I am beginning to think it is not 380 in the can, but some other Hogden FINE ball powder. And yes I will try the IMR 4198 load with 140 gr's . I have several box's of Nosler 140 gr Spire point as my M38 Swedish loves them. I think I will load up 1 or 2 round's of this mystery powder in 308 to test in my 1912 Chilean. Will be sandbagged real well with 100ft of string tied to the trigger. 3 of my manual's concur that 44 gr of H380 under a 180 gr bullet is a good starting load. ANY sign of pressure and that can is INSTANT PLANT FOOD.

Be sure to read through that article which ANDY gave the link for.

There are some very interesting possibilities (apart from just plain too fat) with that Hornady slug in a Carcano...... when used with any powder that even thinks it might be slow. The long bearing surface of the bullet could be hindering the bullet actually GOING down the barrel, instead coming to a stop and forming an obstruction just in front of the Chamber.... with a resulting pressure spike.

This is something I have never run into.

I simply developed a fast-powder load for my own Carbine with the flatbased 140, found that it did fine in the Carbine, and then tried it in rifles with longer barrels. As Steve has said (and I concur) I do think a flatbase bullet is a necessity in a Carcano, especially if you are going to use 140s. That swift kick on their fundament sets them up nicely and you get no gas destabilisation such as bugs boat-tails.

Good luck, friend. See you at the range.
