6.5 Creedmoor vs. the .308 Winchester

“Why 6.5 CM instead of .308 Win cartridge - Put simply, they sling the long, slim, high-BC 6.5 mm bullets at respectable velocity. It duplicates or beats the .300 Win Mag’s trajectory with less recoil than a .308 Win. Compared to the 175 Sierra MK fired from a .308 Win, the 6.5 mm will have 27% less wind drift and about 10 MOA less drop at 1000 yards. Despite a 35-grain deficit in bullet mass, the 6.5 Creedmoor will retain 18% more energy and hit the target 260 fps faster.”

This is from a web source NOT me .

Gonna shoot both at a 1000 soon and see for SURE 👍

WHATS Your View ? 🤷‍♂️😊

10 MOA less drop??!!
Not sure if the website you were looking at Jim, but I have a hard time believing that .
An as far as comparing the two cartridges , well it doesn't matter a lick to me in my disciplines I shoot because my cartridges need to be either. 223 or 308🙂

Comparing my 155scenar load in 308 to my 147 eldm load in 6.5 cm, I get exactly 27.8moa of drop at 1000 yards with both. Windage is quite different though with approx 80" compared to 54" with a 10mph full value wind in favor of the creed.

I should mention its a warm load in 308 with a 22" barrel and a fairly mild load in 6.5 from a 20" barrel.

I wonder if that's supposed to be inches rather than MOA? Looking at Federal factory ammo, 140gr sierra vs 175gr, the 308win is only dropping ~4" more at 500 (200yd zero).

6.5 creedmoore is like 1000 meters all around caliber, I can hit that easily without too much effort and great weather, Lol.

308 win is easy at 500 to 600 meters and I can hit that that easily, for heck I could hit steel IDPA target at 550m with my stag 10 with just only Elcan SpecterDR 6x zoom with 7.62x51 BDC reticle.

I like them both, 308 win is a bit cheaper to shot around if you are shooting factory. I reload both and always on look out for deal on factory rounds. It's more enjoyable to shot and reloading, Lol.

I just plugged in these numbers into quickload and came up with these numbers
Both with 30" barrels and zeroed at 300 yards , terminal distance 1,000 yards .

308 win., 175Match King at 2813 MV
MOA at 1,000= 27.31
6.5 Creedmoor , 143 ELDX at 2840 MV
MOA at 1,000= 23.78

Having shot BOTH cartridges extensively out to 1,000 meters with 30" barrels and hand loads I can tell you for a fact the Creedmoor does not fly that much flatter.
Heck my beloved 6.5WSM did not fly 100 MOA fatter than a 175 Match King in a 308!😒

My buddy has been shooting a 22-250 and a 300 WM for as long as I can remember. Last year he bought a 6.5 Creedmoor, he instantly fell in love with the cartridge. 800yds for it is a breeze, high BC bullet and low recoil.
I'm trying to decide between the 6.5CM and the 7mm-08, very similar trajectory, but I'm leaning toward the 7mm-08 as from a strictly hunting perspective it has an edge.

Without specifying the rilfe's spec for each caliber, any calculation is pointless.

I guess the person who gave that statement probably using a common precision rifle barrel length like 24/26inch long and 140gr for 6.5cm and 175gr for 308win to compare the performance.
30inch barrel using 200.20x f class high BC bullet is not something people would use outside F class match.

Knock it down to a 26" barrel and I doubt very much if you will see any great gains.
However as soon. As I get back to my computer I will do just that

My view is the 175MK is a bad choice for long range with a 308W. You either need to go heavier or lighter.

I compared my 65CR loads with my 155gr 308W load and the difference at 1000 yds is pretty close to 5MOA and 100 fps. Thats not a massive difference.

I like the 65CR just fine and it would certainly be more effective to much longer distance than a 308W but the old 308 is plenty capable inside 1200 yds, with the right projectile choice. One is not wildly better than the other. The quality of the rifle and the shooter will be much more important.
