6.5 CM vs 308 Win

I'm not sure why the emphasis is on how much "flatter" the 6.5 Creedmoor is relative to the .308? Not that it isn't generally flatter and not that that isn't a benefit when dealing with range uncertainty (as in situations where you have to locate and range targets under a time-constraint) but the biggest benefit is how much less wind deflection there is at distance. I'm too lazy to go get my Kestrel to get the actual numbers but a 140gr ELD-M going about 2650fps (which you can get out of an 18" barrel) has the same wind deflection as a 175gr RDF (much better BC than the SMK) going 2750fps (26" barrel). I learned this in the "before-times" when I had a 19" 6.5 Creed Stag-10 and compared the ballistics to my 26" .308 at the time. That was the impetus to building an 18" 6.5 Creed folder, same wind as the .308 in a much more compact form with less recoil, probably my favourite "non-competition" configuration. Effective out to about 1200, soft shooting. I think it's on it's 3rd barrel now...

I don't understand the 6.5CM vs 308 debate. Why don't you compare 6.5CM vs 260 or like the other thread of 6.5CM vs 6.5x??? At least you are comparing similar bullets application for powder. Maybe its because people are just bored....

I think it’s a good discussion. On paper you find out pretty quick that there’s no clear winner by a country mile when picking a cartridge. Bullet selection, barrel twist, reamer, powder and stock has far more to do with a winning cartridge than the surface info you get from youtube personalities shooting a factory gun with factory ammo to get clicks and likes. There’s lots of cartridges that work really well if the rifle is setup to shoot the right bullet. It seems like most of the f class crowd has settled on 7mm bullets and not in high speed heavy recoiling cartridges. They’ve been at it so long that they’ve balanced the benefits of recoil, speed and barrel life and figured out what is the best long term cartridge that they can predict it’s performance. I think most people would be fairly surprised if they actually started comparing these cartridges on paper. You just can’t compare factory offerings, it has to be what the cartridge is actually capable of. The 223 remington is a great cartridge, but if the barrel can only stabilize 55 grain bullets than it’s complete garbage for shooting long range.
There’s not really enough difference between the 260, 6.5-47 and 6.5 creedmoor to debate. Creedmoor has lots of good quality brass available. That pretty much pushes it to the top of the pile for anybody shooting any amount of volume. And they’d all be great necked down to .257”. Imo the king of the 6.5s would be the 6.5prc or the 6.5-284. The drawback to each of those is moving to a medium or long action.
At the end of the day, they’re all great cartridges if they’re used within their intended purpose. Pushing a 200 grain bullet to 300winmag performace in a hunting rifle doesn’t make much sense, but it sure makes sense if you’re shooting ftr.
