6.5 CM vs 6.5 PRC

Great cartridge. I’m using 143 gr eldx with R26 @3050 fps. Haven’t killed anything with it yet but just put a smaller hunting scope on it. Going to also try some Sierra game changers with Retumbo and H1000.

I was runnin 143 ELDX's in both my 6.5 PRC's... WLRM primers and H-1000 powder near max load...no pressure signs for me and awesome groups. (( your rifle may be different...reduce loads and work up()
So far, only paper and shoot n see's were the victims ! Hard to put down my lucky favorite old girl A-Bolt II 300WSM Stainless Stalker !

I think the 6.5 PRC is a great cartridge, very efficient and accurate and a couple hundred fps faster than the Creedmore, it would be my choice if starting fresh. The issue that I have with it is that as a hunting rifle at moderate ranges then their is really no advantage over a 270 Winchester if you happen to have one of those around which a lot of folks do. Long range target shooting is another matter the 6.5 PRC has the advantage.

Hello, I just bought a 6.5 PRC savage 110 high country. So I am going to hand load 143 hornady ELD x.
It longe range caliber and it is good for hunting and target shooting.
It can easily take black bear, deer, elk and even short range moose.

I personally use my 300 win mag or 7 Remington magnum. 6.5 PRC is strong enough to take a moose too but it is risky for longe range. I feel Better to have more power. 6.5 PRC is good to hit up to 1000 yard easily. But it is my choice to use 300 wm.

I'm using 6.5PRC for hunting, depending on the cartridge or your reload you can take a moose out up to 500yrd. I haven't started reloading hunting rounds so I'm using factory hunting ammo.

Ie: Hornaday Hunter Precision 143gr EDL-X still has enough energy @ 1600ish ft-lbs vs. 6.5CM has about the same but at 300yrd ( a moose you don't really want under 1550 ft-lbs)

Most places I hunt moose are up to 400yrds, so it suits my needs. I used to hunt with a .300WSM that I gave to a new hunter in our group. Heh, you can also take out a moose with a 30-30, but gotta be close. Get what suits you and enjoy. Hunting caliber topics are the same as "what brand/type of oil should I put in my motorcycle".

In the end what you want is, know your rifle/the round your shooting with. Shoot it (not just 2-3 days before the hunt to make sure the scope is sighted correctly).

In the end, what matter is have fun with it and enjoy you time in the woods :) Even if I don't get one, I enjoy the memories and the quality time spent with my group every seasons.

That's my 2¢

Thank you for the advice! I’m pretty overwhelmed with all of the different options out there and trying to balance range, power, longevity, and price. But ultimately very excited to get into this hobby and comments like that are very helpful. Have a good one 🤙

Many moose have been taken by the Old Swedish Mauser (6-5x55) using Norma 165 grain round nose bullets. The 6.5PRC will do it just as well, better and at longer ranges with Berger’s excellent 156 grain bullet offering! I was using 143 grain ELD-X’s but recently got my hands on a few hundred of the Bergers and I’m pretty sure they will be all I use in the 6.5PRC from now on.

One guy was wondering about his barrel after 1k rounds... sorry mate that is the barrel life of the 6.5 prc.

I'd want 5-6 ready to thread on barrels if I was going that way

I’ve heard a lot about the 6.5 PRC vs Creedmoor debate. Anyone running PRC for hunting in Canada?
I have Both and the 6.5 PRC is a LOT more cartridge then the 6.5 CM is ! But in reality all it dies is add Distance .
Using the same bullets it’s not gonna kill any different . Shoots flatter as it’s Faster 👍😀

Anyone "getting into this hobby" has NO business attempting to take game at any distance over about 200 yds.

The PRC is a magnum cartridge designed for long range shooting and a newbie doesn't have the experience, knowledge, nor skills to utilize the performance a PRC is capable of. As someone mentioned above, the PRC is gonna burn the barrel very quickly and newsflash, barrels are expensive.

The 65 Creed is more than enough cartridge for any newbie. Use the extra money you save to buy ammo so you can practice and build some skills and experience.

pretty simple:

same bullets but more powder, 250 to 300 or fps or so with 6.5PRC ... why wouldn't you like that? Similar recoil, not noticeable to me ... you can load a 140gr or 143gr 6.5 in a 6.5PRC that still has and holds over 1000 ft lbs at 1000 yds ...

What it means is you can easily use it for almost all big game in Canada, if that's your choice, and you use the right bullets etc.

Uses more powder than 6.5CM but can be 250 to 300 or more speed + energy at longer ranges ... and your not dealing with Magnum recoil ...

Its my main rifle now ✔️ except for Moose - I still use my 9.3 because it's my moose laser gun

I wouldn't have a problem shooting a moose with my 6.5 PRC, but if I was a new hunter there are a bunch of other cartridges that are more available and would do the same job. The 6.5 PRC shoots the same bullet as the 6.5 Creed but shoots it faster which gives it more energy and a flatter trajectory. Creed ammo is everywhere, all the major ammo makers have several different lines of ammo. PRC ammo is easily available but less selection and more expensive, so it really depends on if you care about that or not.

This is a spot where the PRC shines.
