6.5 Grendel AR.

Ive played around with both AR15 and AR10. My current rifle is a AR-10 in 7.62. However, I am interested in the 6.5 Grendel round in the AR platform. I like the idea of something that can keep up with .308 but with less recoil, and more kick then the 5.56. The vast amount of accessories for the AR15 platform vs the AR10 is nice as well. I have also have recently had an increase in the 6.5mm caliber in general. having heard much praise for it in various shapes and forms.

I did a search for 6.5 Grendel AR threads but the last one was from late 2013. Any input of the current state of building a 6.5G in Canada? How are parts to source and brass/ammo? As far as I am aware 6.5 recently gained saami standard so ammo should be a little easier to find correct?

This is just a thought, not seriously considering it yet. Just testing the waters to see if its something I could do relitively easily or if its going to be an eternal struggle. Have quite a few other projects I would like to tackle first.

Ammo selection is EXTREMELY limited , and also very scarce

Hornady has 123Gr SST and A-Max, and AA has the 123 Scenar and 120GR BT ( and some other one I can't recall )

Having said that, its totally irrelevant , since if you are really wanted to reach out and make use of the BC of the 6.5 , then you are handloading

If you start off with good 7.62X39 brass ( I use Winchester ) , you just have size with the standard 6.5 Grendel FL sizer and load it up and pull the trigger . I only back off a couple of Gr for fireform

The fireform loads are very accurate so I load them as I would a actual 6.5 Gr load

Scrap rate is maybe 1-5 out of 100 with Winchester Brass .

The advantage of the Lapua brass is the case neck is annealed. It pains me to say this being a Lapua brass fanboy, but for the Grendel the formed brass works great and the reality is you will eventually loose the brass in the weeds !

Less prep since you don't have to deburr flash hole but not a big deal if you have the right tools

6.5 bullets ( I use 123Gr Scenars , some SMK 120 and 123Gr ) are plentiful, so no reason not to load your own Grendel

Whatever you do , buy a Barrel Bolt Combo . A 7.62X39 bolt is NOT the same as Grendel bolt ( recess is about .011 off )

Lots off excellent barrels out there . I have used Sabre ( button rifle ...now out of business ) , Satern ( single point cut rifle ) and AA . AA uses different barrel makers depending on how much you want to $$

By far, the most accurate was the Satern cut rifle .

Satern also has button rifle barrels that are less $$ ( I believe they make the 6.5 Grendel barrel for Brownells )

Good to know. Any particular dealers sell 6.5G parts? had a look at some of the sponsors but no luck.
