6.5 mm

The ballistics of the 140 are great. So great, the bullet came before the cartridge. For the same SD a 270 has to shoot a 150. A Weatherby 270 is worth a look in this class,as is 7mmSTW with a 160.

But understand the 264 is a high performance round, the best powders are surplus 20mm air cannon ones, W-860 or W-872. Hodgdon has a new powder US-869,that fits. It's the 75 grain 458WM case,I'm only filling 71gr with a modified chambering.Don't use that with a stock chambering. Both the rifle and the shooter have to be very accurate to take advantage of the great ballistics.

I run the 140 Sierra SBT at 3100 loaded over H100 powder in a 26" M70. There are no pressure signs and it is a very accurate load in my gun.

Fastest??? I would imagine 6.5/50BMG.. not reasonable but should be FAST. :)
Take a look at the 6.5 Gibbs as well as the 6.5 magnums.Gibbs a good track record for speed and accuracy.
I might suggest that a look at Redding Die charts would give some indication of the more popular chamberings and a visit to Reloaders website would give you some idea of speeds.
Good luck

I have a 6.5 06 and a 6.5 06 ackley improved. They both perform as well as the 264 mag with out all the waste. I love the performance at long range.

Bevan King has 6.5X300 Weatherby reamer that cuts a wonderful chamber! I have seen two of them drive 140 gr Sierras so fast that the bullets blow up before reaching a 100 yd target.

Is that fast enough? :)

If so, Norma 139 gr bullets hold together and shoot incredibly well, and the 140 gr Nosler partitions kill like lightning at 3500 fps.

The 6.5 bore strikes a good balance between performance and efficiency around the '06/284 case capacity. Going a little bigger (like the .264 win) doesn't give enough return on investment to justify all the blast and noise and hoopla. And if you're not running a 26" bbl with the belted case, there's literally no benefit--you're just burning more powder for nil extra fps.

Now going MUCH bigger, like a 6.5 STW or 6.5x300Wby, well now you're talking... though if you're dying for speed with a 140-grain bullet, why not just get a 7mm STW or a 7mm ultra mag?
