6.5 or 338LM

I have used the 7mm-08 and the AI version a fair bit, and played with the 7mm's in general a lot. If 2700-2800 is your goal, you will achieve that with the 7mm-08 AI handily. The 7x57 AI will do it as well. I have been reading about the 7mm WSSM lately that would add about 100 fps to that. I think I'll start looking for a reamer. - dan

Case capacity of WSSM is the same as improved 308 case. Big reason I didn't go that route with my 6.5 F OPen rig. Brass options are also very limited - but still available.

I really like the case volume of the Mauser family and may have to put something together for this down the road.

I just have so much 308 brass that it is hard to change right now.

Hmm, I haven't measured one, but I was under the impression that the WSSM case capacity was closer to the -06 case. I understand perfectly about the 308 thing, I shudder to think how much 308 brass I have tucked away in various places. - dan

I was all over the WSSM when it was announced. A BR styled case on steroids. What's not to love.

Others beat me to it and a couple (? - at least one) put a 7WSSM together and that is when the performance got figured out. Then other reports showed similar things.

With the 1 horse show for supply and it being not all that great in the beginning, I went on to improving the 308 for my 6.5 Mystic.

'06 type case volume is simply the RSAUM family minus a couple of grains. Push the shoulder back 1/8", maybe 1/4" and you should be there.

So I did it bought a Rem 700P in 338 lapua looks good thanks for the info!

Good choice!!! The 285gr bullets available for this caliber are a nice happy medium to the 300gr'rs that bump up the recoil quite a bit from the easy shooting 250s.

It'll be awhile before you burn the barrel out of your 338.
