This rifle was envisioned as the Ultimate Truck Gun or UTG. A couple of the areas we hunt it is a mix of open country and timber. Typically there will be some driving to different spots and some walking around. Often in and out of the truck several times per day. There is an opportunity of getting a long shot on a moose or deer and also a chance of bumping something on the road. So the criteria was a somewhat compact rifle with a detachable magazine. Something similar to my Ruger Scout rifle but with a bit longer range capability.
The rifle started as a Winchester M70 Classic stainless. Corlanes installed and chambered a International Barrels 6.5 barrel and fitted a McMillan stock and Pacific Tool bottom metal that takes a MDT WSM magazine. Currently it has a 7 round magazine but MDT has started making 3 round WSM mags too so I'll probably order a few next time I get something from them. I detest flush fit detachable magazines but the 7 round mag is maybe a touch too long for my preference. Although this is not a sheep rifle so perhaps it doesn't matter. I suppose I'll wait until after this season to see how it works out.
The rifle is topped with a new Vortex Razor 2 4.5-22 scope with illuminated reticle. Perfect for longer ranges or jumping out of the truck if we get lucky and a bull is standing next to the road.
I am planning to load 127 grain Barnes LRX bullets for hunting and Hornady 143 grain ELDM bullets for range fun. But they haven't shown up yet and I have some 120gr TTSX bullets so Bartell gave me some Quickload suggestions to try. First group I shot went 4 bullets into .47 MOA so I think I'm just going to load up some more ammo and use it for hunting this year and revisit further loads when I have more time.
