6.5 Rem Mag

Based on the 350 Rem Mag case necked down to 6.5. Ballistically a little quicker then a 6.5-06, though I would expect that was simply my personal examples rather then a general rule. Originally marketed as a 270 in a short action short barrelled woods rifle, and that is what it was. I like them, though they don't do anything the 25-06, 6.5-06, and 270 won't do. - dan

I personally prefer the 6.5-284, another ballistic twin. I think these days if a guy wanted a magnum short action 6.5, I'd be inclined to use the 270 WSM case instead, much better availability of brass. I haven't seen loads or brass for the 6.5 RM for many, many years now.

Well....it's probably one of the coolest cartridges I have ever worked with. The rifle I have the pleasure of working with has some magical qualities that must have something to do with Mr. Leeper doing the work. One of these qualities is that as long as you use H4831 it shoots wayyyy under MOA, and it actually follows the Nosler manual so accurately it is scary. 120 Btips at 3240fps and 140 Accubonds at 2985fps with SDs under 7fps on every string I have shot with both.
It has superior capacity (slightly but so) than the 6.5-06 and 6.5-284, and given my results (this rifles shoots into 1/2 MOA with a 2.5-8 using ham-handled loads) is easily as accurate as either of the others in a hunting rig. This wonderful example is 7lbs 2oz with the Leupold, talley's, Mr. Leepers special contour 24" Shilen and some few aesthetic pieces of metal removal.
This rig does have a Wyatt CFE box and in recommend it for this cartridge in a Remington or in your case a Winny SA would be perfect Chuck.
I really like 6.5 projectiles, and this ORIGINAL short mag still does it all and now with some pinache due to its history.

When you wear out three pieces of brass I should have you send me a bill and three loaded dummies to see how they feed in my Model 70 WSM.
Honestly, if youre already set up in your rifle for WSM cartridges, I think I would go 6.5 WSM, and I am a fan of the 6.5 Rem Mag. It would just be easier. - dan
for sure. What I don't like about the WSM's is the mag box room. A saum, or 6.5 RM would give cartridges the proper breathing space in there.
The donor will be easier to sell as a 7WSM...
Not selling many these days. I can't recoup near the cost anymore. ;-)
True. I've never gotten back the cost of a custom rifle, usually not even close. - dan

I've been looking at getting a 6.5 SAUM built, I actually like everything about it. Can anyone point me in the right direction here in Saskatchewan as to where I could possibly have one built?
