6.5 Remington Mag

Performance

Remington is the only company which provides ammunition for the cartridge. They provide a single load, the 120-grain (7.8 g) PSP-CL. This Remington factory ammunition with its light for caliber bullet is only recommended for small deer and predator species. Those wishing to take advantage of the versatility of the 6.5mm Remington Magnum have little choice but to handload their ammunition.

The 6.5 mm Remington Magnum compares favorably with other 6.5mm (.264 caliber) cartridges. It terms of energy it is bested by the 6.5x68mm RWS and the .264 Winchester Magnum. However, neither the 6.5x68mm RWS nor the .264 Winchester Magnum can be chambered in a short action rifle. It provides a leap in performance over the non-magnum cartridges such as the .260 Remington and 6.5x55mm Swedish.

Long gone and stone dead for almost 30 years. Ballistic twin to modern 6.5-284. Not a bad little cartridge, never caught on because of the 20" barrel on the 600 Rem and it needs 24" to shine.

Bill Leeper just built me a 6.5RM on a ss700 SAUM action. The rifle has a Wyatt box mag that allows me to load out a bit farther. It's bedded into a Ti stock and has a 24"Shilen #2 bbl.It wears a 2.5x8 VXIII,and I'm just getting ready to work up loads with the 120BT and 120TTSX.Bill expects the rifle will do around 3000 with a 140gr. and should run around 3200 with the 120s. I found a 6.5 Rem mag brass in with my 264 wm brass.Interesting looking round. What is it like?Who has one?Who chambers this one.
Gord.

You will find the 6.5 Remingtion Magnum in the obituary. The 6.5x284 Norma has been the trend where it was brought back to life from the long range shooters. (1000 yards). Many great loads for the 6.5x284 and factory ammo is also available from Nosler, Black Hills and Hornady.

The 6.5 Remington has a belt which is a problem in some rifles, the 6.5-.284 has a rebated rim, which can also be a problem in some rifles, and the 6.5-06 is too long for optimum accuracy if you believe in that sort of thing, I don't. But maybe the 6.5 would be optimum on a WSM case, short like the 6.5 Remington without a belt. But build it on a long action so you can seat those long heavy VLDs out so as not to loose powder capacity.

I have a 6.5 Rem Mag in a Rem 660 with 20" barrel. I have harvested dozens of one-shot caribou with it and with the 20" barrel it's a pocket 270. Carbine length and 400 yard capable. Having some barrel wear issues and re-barreling the rifle. When the barrel was newer I'd get 1" groups at 200 yards with 120 Sierras or 129 Hornady bullets. My re-barrel cartridge choice will be another 6.5 Rem Mag but I'll extend the barrel to 23". I'll now have a 270+.

Check out the Nosler reloading manual for it's potential. Smoking!

The 6.5 Remington has a belt which is a problem in some rifles
Can you explain the problem with the belt?

Some people don't like belts because they feel that there can be problems with headspace with belted rounds.I've loaded for a lot of different rounds, some belted, most not but have never had problems one way or another.I wouldn't let a belt stop me from chambering a barrel to that cartridge if I wanted to. Mur

As long as you adjust the die to have the shoulder of the round control the headspace rather than the belt it has ZERO effect on the utility of the cartridge. In other words it's a matter of cosmetics.
