I am looking for advice and comments on a 6.5 Creedmoor load for a AR 10 with a 24" barrel. Currently I am shooting a 140gr ELD - M at 2560 fps , the gun functions well. I would like to get the speeds up so I was thinking lighter bullets would help with that and keep the reliability. What are people using, at what speeds ? Also I need a source for reasonably priced 6.5 Bullets

Im new to the the ar10 or any ar for that matter. I’ve loaded 123gr and 130gr. Both show pressure signs at low to mid level. The thing shoots very accurate though. It’s got a ballistic advantage barrel. It functions with factory ammo but a don’t feel comfortable shoot it, the bolt turns brass coloured after a couple shoots and it leave huge ejector marks.

Bore dimensions vary.... gas impingment reduces volume and pressure of expanding gas... all can lead to a drop in velocity in a gas rifle vs a bolt rifle.

I have seen enough "slow" semis to know this is not unique. I also have seen that AR's do not like being hot rodded in general.

so the questions goes back to how did the combo shoot? If you are getting very good accuracy, consistent/safe function, brass that is not beat up, then enjoy it for what it is.

If you are concerned about external ballistics, play with a ballistics program and compare the same bullet leaving at 2500fps, 2600fps and 2700fps all the way out to 1200yds.

Drop will certainly be less the faster you go BUT wind drift really doesn't change a whole heck of a lot even with 200fps difference... and it is wind drift we should be concerned with.

wrt to drop, we should know what the distance is to target and if we know that distance, just dial what you need. a few more clicks is not the end of the world.

Accurate LR set ups has more to do with proper load tuning with minimal vertical and accuracy vs all out speed. If you want good LR AR accuracy, tune for the rifle/barrel... NOT the chronie.

I run 130 class projectiles in mine (Hornady ELD-x mostly), H4350 is the only powder I use now but have tried Varget, IMR4451, and Hybrid 100V. I think I'm right around 2700fps but would have to check (at work and haven't shot the MH in a while).

I like to stay away from the heavy projectiles in my semi auto rifles regardless of twist rate, I like middle of the road weight bullets. I feel that they are closer to what the rifle is designed for. Just like in my 308 semis I don't load any heavier than 175gr even if the twist rate supports going heavier. This also allows for loading to mag length and still being close to the lands rather than pushing a heavy projectile too far back so that it fits the mags.

HI Jerry Better trajectories and less exposure to external ballistics ... in a nutshell :)

at longer ranges the 140gr bullet would have less wind drift than a 120 or 100 gr bullet. Much less.

A light bullet slows down very quickly. Think ping pong ball and golf ball. The ping pong is faster, but which would be the most effective at 50 yards?

Are you sure the powder is 4350? Any chance some 4831 got in that can?

EDit: I checked my tables, and discovered what I said about velocity, drop and drift is not accurate.

What i said would usually be true, but if you are using match bullets (say the Hornady ELD MAtch of 140 vs 120 gr) the small Creed case does not give the 140 enough velocity to make it shine.

I use the 140s in a 260 Ackley and get 2950. The 120s would not perform nearly as well.

In the Creed, out to 500 yards, assuming 2700 and 2950 fps, the 120 only drifts 20% more than the 140. Not that big a difference, unless you are competing.

Curious why not the 147gr ELDM? Higher BC and should be about the same price as the 140gr ELDM? I have the same rifle and was planning on trying load development with the 147gr ELDM + H4350 as my Stag 10 seemed to like the factory 147gr Hornady match.

Twist rate, not sure what the 6.5 CM runs but a 147gr ELDM is a very long bullet and probably pushing the 1 in 7.87in of the Swedish Mauser.
