I was just wondering if any of you out there shoot a short magnum necked down to .264 cal. I like the idea of the 26 cal, and was thinking of a 6.5/06, but then necking down a wsm case to 26 crossed my mind. I'm sure it's already been done long ago, but just wanted to see if anybody on here has experience with it. What are your thoughts?

Yep, the 6.5 WSM has been done in large numbers in the US. I bet it is more popular then the 264Win that it duplicates.

The 6.5-06 is a wonderful cartridge for hunting and LR shooting. A bit more oomph then the 6.5-284. The 6.5 WSM just gives you a few more FPS then either.

The 6.5 WSM would not be my choice for comp shooting as throat erosion and barrel heat would be severe.

Do you think an improved 6.5/06 would be a better option than the 6.5 WSM?

I'm not a competition shooter, but I do like to hit the range a bit. In a summer I usually fire off 1500-2000 rounds, but in a lot of different rifles. This would be used at the range, but built mostly for hunting.

I would go with the 260 for LR plinking and moderate range hunting. If that is not enough horsepower, the 6.5-06 is plenty.

If you already have a short magnum action, the 6.5WSM is very interesting but barrel wear is high if you shoot lots.

Catinthehat is the guy to talk to he has made more than one 6.5WSM. He does frequent this board and Shortmags board, he has great results BTW.

I'm not too fond of the 6.5-06. Presently have one and I would prefer the 6.5-284.

next would be the 260 Rem or the regular 6.5x55 swede application/action size pending.

If you don't mind replacing barrels, the 6.5 wsm is a bit ahead of the 7mm wsm.

I'll be building a 7 wsm shortly and given the performance of the berger 180gr vld ~.7 bc. it should be a performer.

Brass isn't really an issue since you can form 6.5-06 from nice Lapua 06 brass and the 6.5 or 7 wsm from Norma brass - we stock both!

I probably don't have to tell you this, but if you're going to build up a 6.5 anything, figure out what you're going to really want to do with it. Twist rate is critical. 1-7 or maybe 1-8 for VLD 160 grainers for long range, or the 140gr boat tails and a throat long enough to accomadate the ogive. 1-8 to 1-10 for bullet weights from 90-the flat base 140grn spire points (140 spire points are about the limit for 140 grn flat base for stabiliseing) The 6.5-06 needs to push the 140 grn flat base over 3000 fps to get good stability frim a 1-10 twist bbl, that is the case with both of mine. The main problem with most reamers is that the throats are to long = to much freebore etc. I've bought a special Manson reamer with a short throat for the lighter bullets in my 6.5-06s', both of which had long throats and needed the bbls set back and rechambered to get better than mediocore results from the rifles. The nice thing about the 6.5-06 in its standard form, is the simple forming process of the brass, availability of standard length actions from any and all commercial mfgs, decent throat life and if the rifle is put together by someone that knows what they're doing, great accuracy on a par with anything out there right out to 1000yds. I don't know about catinthehat, probably a stand up guy that knows his stuff, but mysticplayer has a pretty good reutation around my area. Get in touch with either of them for more details and bash over what you're really looking for, the 260 REM or 6.5x55 may just cover all of your needs adequately. bearhunter
