Hello Everyone,

I am interested in reloading for the 6.5 Jap semi-rimmed round, and cannot find dies anywhere. Does someone happen to have an old set they can sell me (must be compatible with Lee presses) or know where I can buy a set?

Also, does anyone have some load data for this caliber, using Winchester 760 powder?

Im about to start reloading for this caliber aswell. Dies are available at Ellwood Epps. If they do not have it most places can order them in - Anything Japanese is pricey it seems. I also have a Type 99 on the way and will also be doing 7.7...
 
LEE PRECISION makes 6.5 Jap dies, as do just about everyone else. The Lee dies are about $30 retail in Canada and come with a shellholder.

For BRASS, if you don't want to spend an arm and a leg on the Svedish stuff, you can just use .220 SWIFT brass; all dimensions apart from the neck diamater are compatible with the Arisaka. The semi-rimmed cases headspace on the RIM, so njo headspace problems. Fireform with a slightly-mild loading and you will have no blow-back into the chamber. Don't fireform with a super-light loading.

I find that Arisakas respond best to a SOFT BULLET. Stay AWAY from hard-jacketed Match bullets. You NEED the soft jackets because of that almost-square Metford rifling; it distorts the bullet pretty badly and a hard-jacketed Match bullet can actually explode on leaving the muzzle. I have been using Remington flatase 140s (the bulk-pack ones) with success in my Arisaka after a most embarassing 200-yad group with hard-jacket Swedish bullets: the 5-round group on target was 10 yards by 20 yards an not even I am that bad a shot. Bullets were observed exploding 20 feet downrange! SOFT JACKETS are the cure.

Arisaka can be capable of some utterly SCARY accuracy. My rifle likes Norma factory ammo, but I can't afford the stuff. Still, a half-inch group off the sandbags at 145 yards is not to be sneezed at, especially for an iron-sight battlefield relic.

If you can grab a copy of the March 2011 edition of "Rifle" magazine, there's a very interesting article by Mike Venturino on the various 6,5mm. military surpluses available and some valuable reloading data.

For example:

6.5x50mm. Japanese Type 38, 30.5 inch barrel, PRVI Partizan brass, WLR primers.

140gr. Sierra BT -- IMR-4350 -- 37gr. -- 2531 fps
140gr. Sierra BT -- IMR-4350 -- 38gr. -- 2594 fps

140gr. Speer FB -- IMR-4350 -- 37gr. -- 2487 fps.

Graf & Sons sells Prvy Partizan but I fear it is reserved exclusively to the US citizens nowadays...

Keep us posted on your experience. I've got a Type 38 Arisaka that is ruinously expensive to feed...
 
Found an article by Charles E.Petty in the April 2010 of Handloader magazine about reduced rifle loads with Trail Boss.
He used TrailBoss in conjunction with jacketed bullets to get low recoil and low velocity loads without losing accuracy.
Recipe? Just find the powder weight that fills the case to the bottom of the bullet WITHOUT compression (Trail Boss doesn't like compressive charges).
This will be your maximum charge. Back off to 75% of that weight and this will be your starting load with just about any caliber.
No need to use lead bullets. Just medium to light weight jacketed ones.
