6.5 X 55 for precision rifle

This may have been asked previously in the past - if so sorry, I don't visit this forum very often but I am curious. Is the 6.5 X 55 legal for F class precision rifle and if it is, are shooters using it? It would seem to be a natural with its low recoil, lower muzzle blast and inherent accuracy (according to the Swedes). How does it perform at the longer ranges past 800 meters? The BC for the bullets are very high so it should be excellent at the longer ranges. Would this caliber be a good base on which to build a precision rifle for competition?
 
For starters, F-Class and Precision class (in the BCRA at least) are two completely different classes, but yes, 6.5x55 is "legal" for both classes.

A bunch of new f class shooters in Ontario are using them for F(M) class. F(M) is a factory class and Tikka makes a heavy barrel 6.5X55 that is popular in these parts.
 
260 vs Swede is a very even match up. Both push the same bullets to within spitting distance of each other. The larger swede would go faster...maybe.

Another excellent choice would be the AI versions of either.

Read my post on the 6.5 Mystic to learn more about the internal ballistics of this class of wildcats. I believe that the 6.5 Mystic and 260AI's are about perfect given todays powders. The Swede may have a bit too much case capacity to be ideal (really splitting hairs here).

Either of these 'four' cartridges (reg. and AI versions) will be better in the long run then the 6.5-284 as far as barrel life is concerned. All basically dominate the 1000m and in game.

If you only shoot 600m or shorter, the 6BR/family and shorter 6.5X47L would be worth a thought.

Last winter I built a custom FO rifle with std swede brass chambering but with tight neck and shorter throat depth. Basically a modern chamber based on the 6.5 x 55.
Balistically it turned out the same as 6.5 x 284, however I only have to use 44gr of H4350 to achieve 3000 fps, about 10% less than 6.5/284. This alone will provide longer barrel life.
As to accuracy at 1000 yds it proved superb. At Ottawa F class championships rifle was 100% competitive.
Today at CS. shot my first clean round at 300 yds, the distance that I have historically had the most trouble at..
Anyways this antique cartridge is still one of the best, and a pleasure to shoot. I would reccomend to anyone.
 
6.5x55 Sm

An excellent caliber with modest recoil and great bullets.

No problem with any match distance 300 to 1000 yds.

I have a custom savage LH and it is superb for accuracy and a lot easier on barrel as well.

Not 10 but 5, in the Tikka T3 Varmint or Super varmint model if your looking for a stock 6.5x55mm
 
The Tikka looks good though I was thinking of making a Rem 700 long action with a Rock Creek 5R barrel and 10rd mag if I could figure out how to do the mag. Maybe a Rem 700 based tube gun.
 
V bull mag system should work on the 700 with 260 Rem as long as you order the 308 based mag system. Don't think you'd be as lucky with the 6.5 x 55 though. (not sure though, I am sure some expert will pop up)
