6.5x55!!

Have used a 6.5x55 to cull a couple of free ranging Buffalo for a friend. 1st one was at about 100 yards , center the forehead just below the boss and had complete penatration taking out about 2inches of spine. 2nd was at about 130 yards, same type of head on shot but a little off and hit just over the bulls left eye, a quick follow up in the chest destoryed the heart and stopped just under the hide on the off side. Both bulls weighed 1600-1800 lbs. Ammo was Bell 139 gr soft point. I've got no complaints same load works great on Coyotes. It's become my number 1 rifle.

Moose is moose, anywhere. If there is a difference, it's not great anyway. Also, I never shot moose beyond 50 yards (obsticles and terrain isssues) + they're easy to call in.

6.5x55 is great and it goes really flat - for 50-100 and 200 yards you can use the same scope settings. Personally I would use something with at least 180 grain bullet with .30 and greater bullet. However, I used 6.5x55 with 170 grain factory ammo and it was perfect!

Yeah, those Scandanavian & Russian Moose must be pretty tiny ...
Not much bigger than a whitetail ya figure ????

The 6.5 has been used there for about a century quite effectively.
I'm dead certain it's just as effective here.

No, they are approx the size of our elk.
And the Swedes take lots of them every year with the 6.5x55 cartridge.

My only personal experence with the 6.5x55 and moose was a big bull that I shot in the neck at about 200m with a 140 Nosler Partion. No impact was seen and my budy then took it with his 308. When I cut into the neck I found the bullet lodged against the spine half way along the neck. Could have been bad luck but I've used 338win for moose since then. Having said that I might try it agian sometime but only with a good chest shot and shorter range.
