I am looking for suggestions for a hunting bullet to use for reloading a 6.5mm wildcat I am building. I have a factory Rem700 300WSM action, I plan to use this to make a 6.5x300 WSM rifle. RCBS makes dies for this, it is called the Leopard. I plan to use it for Deer, maybe Moose at some time. So far the best 140gn boat tail, with high BC that I can find is the Hornady SST.

Anyone have favorite 6.5mm bullets in this wt range?

At the speed that you will be sending those bullet out of a .300WSM the SST are going to be pretty explosive. Go with some sturdier bullet like the Trophy Bonded Bear Claw, Nosler Partition, Swift A-Frame in the 140gr or the TSX or new Nosler Accubound, both in 130gr. I shoot a 6.5x55 and did some wet newspaper test last summer. Even at 6.5X55 velocity, the 140gr SST came appart everytime in wet newspaper of water filled jugs.

I agree with bcsteve.
Get yourself good quality bullet, bonded one.
I would go with TSX for price and for quality with TBBC or A-frame.

I use 140gr Nosler Partition in mine 6.5x55, but that bullet only goes V0=2750fps and is not intended to kill over 400yr

I have shot the 6.5 WSM ( known as the 6.5 Badcat to some :D ) for about six years now, and also shoot the 6.5WSSM.

The cartridge is a pretty cool number.
Old Badger and I originally used 300WSM brass, but when the 270 WSM brass became available , we used that , as there is less neck turning involved.

As far as bullets go, I have shot animals with Barnes XLC's and Sierra Game Kings in the 140 grain weights.
I have used about 6 different bullets in it all the way out to 1k, and the 140 Game King works very well , as far as Accuracy and such, but
140 Alberta Wildcats work stupendously also!
Richard builds a fantastic bullet in the 142 range, and can build them with a very stiff hunting jacket.
I received some heavy 165 grain rebated boatail ULD's from hin recently that I can't wait to try out iin my son's 6.5/284 and the 6.5WSM.

You should give him a call if you are interested.

The Barnes TSX works well also in the accuracy tests I did at 200 yards.
BTW, Higginson's has the 6.5WSM dies as a stock item for far less than RCBS and they work very well!

6.5 Wsm

Thanks guys, these were really helpful suggestions, I forgot about Wildcat bullets, I will contact them.

I am also using the 270 WSM brass (6.5-270 WSM known as the 'Rock" in my reference book), it is identical to the 300 WSM (6.5-300 WSM - Leopard), and in my area we are limited to 270 cal in much of the province of Ontario, the 270 headstamp causes less concern, than a 300 WSM headstamp, eventhough lthe bullet is .264.

Thanks again

I built a 6.5-06 and use a 140 Grain Hornady Bullet. You will get simular results with the sort Mag. The bullet has never let me down.

Id go with the new Nosler 130 grain Accubond, 2nd choice would be the Barnes 130 gr TSX, 3rd would be Nosler 140 gr Partition

I didnt like how the Sierra 140 gr BTSP performed in my 260, dont imagine adding 400 fps would do good things for it :runaway:

For some reason, that's the bullet that gives me the same accuracy as the match bullets in my Rem 260, Douglas 1-8" barrel. The Hornady 140gr. SST opens groups up in that gun.

Hey Tod, have you tried the 120gr TSX in your .260? I have a box that I've been meaning to try in my 6.5x55.

I love the SST line and the 140gr have proven very accurate in my rifles. However, keep IMPACT velocity under 3000fps and you will have no issues on game. This is not a Texas HS penetrator so don't use it as such.

I have shot these bullets in various cals, never recovered one, had great entrance and exit wounds even on hard quartering shots. Impact velocities from 2900ish to 2500fps.

The 6.5 WSM will duplicate the 264Win Mag so that gives you a frame of reference for velocity and bullet selections. If you are planning to reach way out with this rig, you might even want to consider the Amax.

nope, only the 130 TSX, which is both accurate and very deadly on deer

I will probably shoot the 130 grain Accubond once they become available this year

since you mentioned moose, I advize against using SST. Thay are blowing up in Hornady-s own Light Magnum line. They are good on deer - side shots only. anything going thru bone or haevy muscle.... won't.

140 gr Partition would be my favorite.
