I just purchased a Brno VZ24 action and was considering a 6.5 mm RM build and had a few questions. The standard Mauser action shouldn't require any modification just the bolt face needs openning correct? From what I have read the main concern with the cartridge is that the longer heavier bullets won't fit in the mag without seating them deep and as a result loosing velocity. I shouldn't have this problem with this action as it is not a short action correct? I have found a 6.5 Swede barrel. A gunsmith should be able to ream this into a 6.5 RM correct? Thank for any help you can give me.

The gunwriters of the 60's were not ready for the idea of a short magnum. The thin 6.5 bullets use up so little powder space that when seated deeply in a short action you lose maybe 25-30ft/sec. The short barrels did give up some speed. A 24" barrel is a good length. Nothing wrong with a standard length action, however and it will allow the use of VLD bullets with a long ogive that can't be used in a short action. The fat case sometimes takes a bit of rail work to feed well. I like the cartridge I have a Rem 660 and Ruger 77 so chambered.

Mausers are a medium action, should work good for seating further out. Barrel will have to be set back about 5 thou and reamed for 6.5RM.

I'd get opinions from your smith about the swede barrel. The 6.5RM runs at higher pressures than the swede. Personally, I would look at buying a new barrel.

The VZ is a large ring, the Swede might be a small ring,so the barrel would have to set back. A Turk mauser would work better, they are small barrel tenon actions. If your swede barrel has long enough chamber cylinder, you will be OK.

So true. In my opinion 6,5x284 would be better choice if you desire that kind performance (feeding from magazine needs to be addressed). The bolt would stay as is.
The Swede barrel is small ring, to small for Brno. New barrel is needed for that action. Also notting wrong is with 6,5x55, 6,5x55AI, 6,5x57 etc, etc.

Also the 6.5-06 and 6.5-06AI would give near Rem Mag #'s... and require nothing but a new barrel.

Thanks guys, the barrel is for a large ring Mauser so I'm ok there. I like the 6.5 Swede I'm having one built for my wife. For my self I wanted some more speed and I like the idea of the 6.5 RM.

I would still be concerned about the higher pressures, for use in an older barrel.

The 98 length action and barrel will work fine for this, I've done both 6.5 Rem Mag and 350 rem Mags on 98 action,s they work very well. Open the bolt face, address the feeding (and it's not magic, voo doo, or rocket science), and you will be good to go. It will give you slightly better then 6.5-06 velocities from like length barrels. Have fun. - dan
