6.5x284 and benchmark poweder: Need some advice

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has ever tried using Benchmark for the 6.5x284, is there any way to compare the burn style of this powder to another (or do I simply look at a cartridge they are both used, compare the grains used and find a listing for the common of the two and go from there?) I don't see a listing for it on any manuals and would like to try it. As you can likely tell, I am fairly new and don't want to do damage to the rifle or my face.... any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I also have some Varget to try, I grabbed a bunch of the berger sample packs and have 130 vlds, 140 vlds, barnes 130 tsx rt, nosler 120 ballistic tips, nosler 140 accubond, nosler 140 partiitons, some 140 gr Amax,
I know I have some great bullets and will find something to be a great load with, but I would like to try the powder I have on hand, but don't see any load data for either in these bullets I have on hand.

Benchmark is too fast for anything in the 6.5-284. Varget is also hot, but it can be used with really light bullets (107 grains and less)

Long heavy bullets need slow powders. Benchmark and varget are too fast.

6.5-284 works well with 4350 and slower powders. I like RL22.

I would not recommend just reducing a powder to a light load and trying it, if the powder manufacturer doesn't list a powder for a cartridge there is likely a good reason.

I think that powder manufacturers only list powders that they consider optimum, popular, and which they've had the time to test - testing is expensive and time-consuming. You can't simply assume that if it's not listed that it's unsafe. On the other hand, you must take real care in developing loads that are "unpublished".
