6.5x284 Norma; are you hunting with it?

I've owned two Blasers in the past, the R93 Off Road and the S2 double rifle......superb firearms! I'm very sure that your new barrel for the 6.5x284 Norma will be a tack driver. If you reload, try the 129 gr. Nosler LRAB, I've achieved 1/2" and smaller groupings from this cartridge.......BTW, it's a Cooper firearm.

I'm sure too; you can see what Thomas does with it on YouTube with his THLR.NO blog and his R93. Only 2000rnds before he had to swap out though.

Have no fear mines a professional so ain't pretty;) All work horse. Like a Dino 308 GT4; ugly but still a Ferrari.

Anyway Blaser's standard barrel in 6.5x284 Norma is 220mm twist rate and 650mm length (aka 8.66inch twist, 25.59 inch length for all you heathens) I believe that falls within your listed spec?

If it's of interest to you I was able to stabilize 140 bergers out of a 8.5 twist.

Good to know. Maybe get to work up a load like Niellim had for meeses!
I don't hold twist rates totally to heart until I've tried them with my rifle. I'm not shooting a world record 1000y, just critters inside 3-400y. Like how they say 1-12 isn't "optimal" for 175g 30cal. I tried and found a load for my rifle that it just loved. Don't know until you try it with your rifle. That's where the fun is! Then the next level is using all that work to fill your freezer with Grade A organic meat!

At sea level that twist rate is a touch slow. 1:8" would be best. If you are at 2000 feet or more it should be fine. I justified going with a 8.5 twist at 2000 feet. Good barrel length though. The other issue is whether or not they provide a magazine and action that can handle the full specified COAL of the 6.5x284 Norma of 82 mm (3.228"). And another factor is the right throat length for the 140 grain bullets. If it is too short the bullets will be jammed back in the case cutting down on powder capacity. If too long, you will run out of neck to seat lighter bullets in.

The Savage usually is a 1:8 twist, and I have seen complaints from some that the throat is too long, and from others that it is too short. Too short is better than too long. Too short is easy to fix with a throating reamer.

Hey Ron,

You are a wealth of knowledge on the books for this caliber but I think you need to look up what the rifle is as what you just said about action doesn't really apply to the Blaser rifle system as there is no action. They use everything from 222rem-500 Jeffreys all in the same system. Swap bolt face, barrel and mag insert and your in a new cal.

Also draw your attention to the quote in my sig-line. Everything you say is well and true for long range target shooting, I will not refute that, but it may not apply to the "combat" of hunting game using this cartridge.

I don't want to end up like your sig-line, as your information on this cartridge would sure help if I rebarrel one of my F-Class rifles to this cartridge! So please do not take offense!

Pretty nice numbers. How have you found the LRAB's for hits on game?

I ask as it was my go to for my winmag in 190s, seeing if it still has same results.

Being in the business, are rifles in that calibre readily available, and if so, who manufactures them?

Good to know. Maybe get to work up a load like Niellim had for meeses!
I don't hold twist rates totally to heart until I've tried them with my rifle. I'm not shooting a world record 1000y, just critters inside 3-400y. Like how they say 1-12 isn't "optimal" for 175g 30cal. I tried and found a load for my rifle that it just loved. Don't know until you try it with your rifle. That's where the fun is! Then the next level is using all that work to fill your freezer with Grade A organic meat!
Likewise, I don't concern myself with tech talk on reloading, firearms and hunting. My 6.5x284 has a 1:8 twist for the heavy bullets (140-142 gr.) however, it shoot's sub-1/2" groups with 129gr. I utilize the KISS (basic fundamentals) theory on reloading, case in point, I use it in all aspects of life. I decide on "one" bullet I wish to use for hunting and work around it with different powders and powder loads........it works most of the time.

I hunt almost exclusively with it now after I bought a Savage LWH. 5.5 of guns are the nicest thing to walk with....

Anyway I've several moose and elk with it now. I was using Berger 140 Hunter but have recently switched to Lapua Naturalis.

I also own a Blaser w/ .308 and .257 Bee barrels. Amazing guns. Very good barrels.

So what have you used the 6.5x284 to hunt for?

How did you find its performance on game you have shot with it?

I recall I told you earlier in the thread that I have hunted with a .264 WM with 140 grain at about 3100 fps. You should get close to the same with a 6.5x284 Norma, and I think another poster just verified that. All moose taken have dropped with one shot. A 6.5x284 should do close to that same velocity and should do an equally good job. A Nosler Partition has been my bullet of choice for moose, but I'm sure there are many other good ones. Since I have two .264 WM's one is being converted to a 6.5 RM. I like the caliber.

Savage, Cooper, perhaps others...

You used to be able to list the guns available in a specific cartridge at the Savage website, but they have totally messed up their website as of the new year. From memory they do make a fair number of models in 6.5x284 Norma.

Thank you, I just wanted to confirm what I was reading in your previous posts. So most of your knowledge is based on theoretical relationship it has to other cartridges that are "similar" and not actually hunting and using the specified cartridge in the field and hunting with it.

So I would like to bring attention to my opening post;

I realize there are other caliber out there that perform near the same that don't burn barrels or have cheaper ammo and availability. They just don't interest me at this time.

And my original question;

Just wondering about hunting with it; what have you hunted with it; are you happy with its performance?

I am well and sure you have done your research on this and other rounds for your re-barrel. It is shown that you have researched the 6.5x284 Norma very thoroughly and your knowledge of that research shows in your post.

Unfortunately it does not pertain to the actual use of it in the field and in hunting applications like my questions asked. Just the theoretical use of it do to it being "similar" to other cartridges.

Sorry I just hate when forums deviate from the questions asked. Maybe next time I will bold the "you" part when asking for individual experiences with something specific

Thank you for your information and input though, it was an in-depth read. I do look forward to seeing other posts you have in this forum.

Have you had the chance to use the Lapua on critters yet?

Pretty nice numbers. How have you found the LRAB's for hits on game?

I ask as it was my go to for my winmag in 190s, seeing if it still has same results.

I haven't hunted with this rifle, it's not even mine just doing some load work for it. I've seen the effects of a 142gr ABLR on a mule deer from a 26 Nosler @ 3300 fps, was pretty huge hole and not much penetration, but the bullet retained 30% on a 100 yard impact, and the deer didn't go a step. Also seen a 129gr ABLR hit a mulie at about 2200 fps, about what a 6.5-284 would land with at 600 yards. Right through the top of the heart and the deer made it a short distance and piled up. Bullet exited

Good do-all open country deer bullet, if you're going after moose, elk or big bear I'd probably look at something a bit stouter in construction

Heres my Savage 111 LRH in 6.5-.284 Norma. What an ugly gun. Just waiting for tax season. Gonna mount a 4-12x50 vx2.
