Very similar load to what I found worked well in my 6.5x47. I also had very good results with H4350 but have ultimately settled on N550 and Berger 130 VLD bullets slightly jammed into the lands. Super easy to load for my 6.5x47 as well.
Generally, as proved by BR and FClass shooters, higher pressure equates to better accuracy - not always as we all know, but this is the general not specific experience.
N540 is the top performer of VihtaVuori powders in 6.5X47 Lapua with 139 grain bullets with N550 second.
BR-style loading is to super high pressures which we do not recommend and some FClass shooters had to be reigned in as they were overboard, but we still think the best route (usually) is to first consider powder which produces highest velocity and adjust from there.
I have a burn temperature chart that rates Varget and N550 at the same temperature. They are listed at 4050 units. I am not sure what units are being used, could be joules. N540 is listed at 4100 units. Not much of stretch from Varget to N540. N540 is probably worth exploring.
I shoot 155 grain class bullets (308win). I have found that AR Comp (burn temp of 3720) shoots similar to Varget (burn temp of 4050), but barrel life is better with AR Comp. There are many options for reloading to a personal standard.
Thanks and interesting Terry. Lapua recommends N540 as closest to their accurate-performing .308 Win., 155 grain Scenar ammo. Again, tops for velocity.
Actually our answering sarcasm with sarcasm is not appropriate or beneficial. We started as handloading business and know that each gun is different and this is the beauty of load development. The results of my last loading of 6.5 Creedmoor produced the worst results ever - total failure - so back to drawing board!
The 6.5-47 is, indeed, an excellent cartridge and I am a fan of the 6.5's generally - I have a pair of .260's, a 6.5 Creedmoor and a 6.5-47 ! For my 6.5-47 I find that I get the very best performance out of the Lapua 123 Scenars and so I leave my supply of 139's for my .260's. Regardless, the 6.5-47 is easy to tune for and I find it quite forgiving of seating depth. Of course, every rifle is different.
You might want to try the heavier bullets in 6.5mm in the 6.5 x 47L. For some reason this cartridge has been branded to be a lightweight bullet cartridge only. I shoot 142's and 152's from my rifles with excellent results. The ballistics of the bullets are superior and they hold in the winds better.
I have had 5 barrels on my 6.5 x 47's and all have been 1 in 8's. They have shot everything from 130's to 152's extremely well. H4350 is my preferred go-to choice but Varget is also a great choice. For the past year every bench class match in the F-Class matches and last years Frosty Farky in Kamloops has been won by a 6.5 x 47 shooting 140 Berger VLD's against the 284's and 6mmBR or Dasher. In the Frosty Farky F-Class match in 2016 the shooter scored a perfect 75-15 V score. One of the few times it has been done and that was at 500 meters.
