6.5x55 cartridge length question

M96 barrels have a looong throat. Ideally, 20 to 30 thou would be good, however, those pills may be falling out of the case before getting that close to the lands. You'll have to do a bit of an investigation. The 4064 powder may be limiting, as its a bit fast for 6.5 x 55.
 
I agree with cosmic. My swedes could take a bullet way out, a coal much longer than data would say. Lighter bullets I couldn't sit far enough out to get close to the lands, heavier ones I could, but they made the rifle a single shot. If you can reach the lands with that bullet, back it about 20 thou out. - dan
 
Yea the bullet meets the lands in it. I have been getting decent accuracy results. 1.2 moa at 100 with the 4064. After measuring lands and seating a bullet thereā€™s a good chunk of the bullet in the case. The base is at about the bottom of the neck. I was very surprised when I did the test. I'd go 20 thou off the lands or 50 thou less than magazine length or the bullet base full gripped by the cartridge neck - whichever is longest.

The Woodleigh Reloading Manual suggests 0.020" to 0.040" to lands for their bullets - fine tune from there. Others I have read - John Barsness (?) suggests 0.030" - about same thing as Woodleigh says. I believe some mono-metal bullets want huge jump - circa 0.070" or similar.

The throat on most M96s goes on forever. You can probably load them out as far as you safely can, and ther'll still be a few hundredths jump left. That's been my experience anyway.
