6.5X55 Loads - 140 gr AMAX and 12 Different Powders!

I doubt your RL26 load is overly hot. Quickload suggests a 140gr Amax @ 3.21", 54.0grs RL26 for 3025 fps (26" pipe) is only producing 58,000PSI

It produces amazing velocity in 6.5x55, 270 Win, 7mm Rem Mag, 300wm

Also does very well in the 8mm Rem Mag....3060 with the 220 grain Woodleigh. D.

414 is a good powder and versatile over a wide range of cartridges. I like it a lot for mass production of hunting loads as it meters great. I don't find it great for target loads as the ES is wonky as most ball powders tend to be.
I'm slowly gravitating to IMR4831 from the H4831, it's not hard to get ES down to single digits with almost the same velocity as the H4831.

With the 243 I load 70 grain Speer HP bullets to 3650 fps. with H414 powder. I have been shooting the 243 caliber since 1950, have owned quite a few, including three that had custom barrels on 98 actions, some with custom triggers. Of course, over the years and with all those rifles, I have tried most every powder there is. I can't claim any powder as being more accurate than Hogdon's version of the old Winchester ball powder they tagged 760 on, with any large rifle primer you happen to have on your bench.
