I have a 308 which I am fond of and smacks me around a lot less than my hot loaded 30-06. But I just recently picked up a 250 Savage which I suspect is going to provide much the same performance as the 6.5 at least going by cal. Keeping both and both are Savage 99s. Be a man, suck it up, and get both. Solves the problem.

I just went and ran them both together in the Winchester Ballistics Calculator and out to 500yds they are virtually identical. Maybe an inch less at 500yds but for all intents a mirror cal. Waddya got to lose? Whichever sounds better to you. Surprised to see my 250 and 257 are so close as to be interchangeable too. Kool.

If you do that for most of the typical game calibers they are all pretty much interchangeable out to 400yds at least. Much of the differences we like to argue about are really splitting hairs and Ford/Chevy issues.

i have a 260 rem[same balistics as the swede] and a 308 win i like them both . i just wish i never sold my 6.5x55. so the swede gets my vote. i'll have to solve the not haveing a swede problem soon.

you know what would make the m14 a near perfect rifle ?................

rebarreling it to 260 rem :D :D :D ( assuming that 6.5x55 is too long for it that is )

6.5x55 gets my vote .

actual reloading costs shouldn't be any different between the 2 rounds .
and if you think about it the swede might end up being cheaper to load for , because you won't have to fire as many rounds to actually hit what your aiming at * cheesey grin * :D

Yeah but I shoot a lot so there's no concern which ever I choose will be shot a lot. I'm thinking more and more that I should just suck it up and get both, but like everyone has said there so similar the sensible side of me says you don't need both because then you need two mounts and two scopes. The gunnut side of me says you can't have too many for any reason :D

I have a few 308's; Win M100, Savage 99f, M305, and I only have one swede, a full furniture full length M-96. I hump a 300 win mag sendero around as my main hunting rifle, but I get the feeling when I tire of carrying 14.5 lbs of smokepole around and sucking up the recoil, that I will own a nice light to carry, light to recoil swede :)
