6.5x55 Pics added

Just checked on the load my buddys wife uses and it is 47 gr of IMR4350 with the 140 partition and CCI 250 mag primer. Gets just under 2800 fps.

I saw here kill a nice moose with that load. One shot in the lungs, it went about 20 yds and the work started. :D

Just inherited an old Mauser from my uncle. I had never heard of this caliber. Would it be close to a .270? Good for deer and bear?
Very good, I have owned several rifles in this chambering!!

Loved them all!!

I realize that the 6.5 inspired the .260, but it is simpler to say it the way I did.

My father owns 3 M96s, all with different modifications done to them. the one he finds most accorate is the one that he shaved the stock on. All have decent scopes on them, and I would not hesitate taking it out for larger game, or smaller. Story I remember in particular is one my dad told me about groundhog hunting.

damn thing had so much power to it, that he could shoot the ground just in front of the gh, and it would pop it into the air (and kill it, obviously)

That, and stories of derbies when guys would bring back truck loads of mangled and blown apart carcases :D

What a nice gift from your Uncle.
Yup I'm totally in love with my 6.5 x55 Swede Mauser.
IMHO it is a dream to shoot. :)

And yah that is an Enfield Sling on her. :D

Well, at least you're honest about it :D ... actually looks cool  ... good idea, I got a spare Enfield sling to put on my M38... ;)

Yah I went to Pullens looking for a sling, and Jim behind the counter handed me the Enfield one for $5, and it works a treat. :D

Before you make the jump, check out the literature on the new "Sako 85", available ("they" say) this November.

Half a dozen or so improvements made to the "75". The 6.5 x 55 is no longer listed as available in the remaining "75's", but the .260 is.

The 6.5 x 55 is one of the cartridges available in the new "85"
as is the .338 Federal, in August (wood), September (synthetic/stainless) and November ( "Greywolf" -laminated/stainless)

yeah I actually looked into it more today, and didnt see the 6.5x55 listed by Stoeger.

the 85 is one damn pricey gun, I might pass! :D

I finally got a couple of pics of it. Looks a bit different than some of the others that have been posted. Has the old iron sights that are graduated up to 1600 yds.

Sorry its a bit blurry but my 3 yr old son wanted to participate. He gets pretty excited when the "Boomers" come upstairs.

It's nice and short, feels a little awkward, but I wanted to stay away from having much work done to it. Seems like a sweet little gun. Too bad I got it the way I did, but I'll teach my son with it one day. Sort of keep it going down through the generations.

That's a nice little rifle. :)
With the minimal recoil of the 6.5x55 it would be an excellent little gun for brush work with the option of longer shots.
The shape of the stock even reminds me of some of the old muskets, which in my opinion is very cool.
If you'd like to make it a little easier to shoot longer shots without changing to a scope(which frankly would be a crime!) have a look at Mojo Sighting Systems peep sights.

The rear and front sights should be a straight swap. ;)

Thanks Kombi, I think that will look great on my husqvarna. I was gonna scope it but those look cool.

Here's my swede, I'm going to take it out for a stroll tommorrow whilst I sight in my new 7mm wthby. I think poor Noel will be getting a call soon as I need to work up a 120 gr pill to use for back up this fall.

What commercial rifles come in 6.5x55?
I wish the Stevens 200 did.

I"ve got an M38 and M96 but don't want to scope them, trying to keep those all original.

The cool thing about the Mojo sights is that you can use it as is for serious accuracy or remove the apperture insert and use it as a ghost ring.

Alot of manufacturers are chambering 260 Rem instead these days because it fits in a short action.
Whereas the 6.5x55 is just a little too long to do so.
That said Tikka, CZ and others are still chambering the 6.5 Swede I believe.
Ruger were recently but that may've changed.

Poor Noel huh? I don't know what it is but this cartridge has always teased me.
I believe this is the very first high powered rifle I ever shot, in a '96 Swede. We thought it kicked like crazy but hey, it did for an 11 year old!
Of the stupid things a couple kids can do while their parent are away getting a load of hay....

Ike, I haven't got dies for this caliber yet. Might not hurt to pick some up when you snag your 9.3 dies. If you grab some bullets we will be off to the races! Look forward to getting your call, it is about time we got out to shoot again too!:)

Do these old girls throw light varmint style bullets well?

Noel
