6.5x55 pushing 140 match bullets?

I have a new Bartlein barrel in 6.5 coming and am trying figure out what to build with it.
Twist rate is 1 in 8.Its 30 inches long so it will finish at 28 probably.Can I expect excellent accuracy
out of that twist rate if the barrel likes those bullets or does it need to be a little faster?
I'm torn between a .260 or 6.5x55.Opinions welcome! ;)
 
The standard twist for the Swede Mausers is 1:7.8 and that stabilizes 160gr bullets just fine. You should be good with 140's at 1:8, no problems.

I like the 6.5x55 better, but that is just me. It has a bit more case capacity and can run a bit harder than the .260, given equal pressures.

Man, we have this discussion/variations of, often around here :p

Go 6.5x55 and use a long action, then you will never have problems mag feeding if you chase the lands.
 
Very good guys thanks.I just wasn't sure if 1 in 8 would make the 140ish grainers work or not.
Since I already have some Swede Norma brass I was leaning that way anyways!
 
I have a Win FWT in 6.5 and they went with a 1-8" twist.It will stabilize bullets up to 156gr but not Hornady's 160's...............Harold nor would my son's T-3
 
Cant make up your mind, How about the 260improved or 6.5 Mystic?

8 twist will do all you could possibly want.

The barrel should shoot superbly. Who is going to do the install?

F class or mag fed?

6.5 which chambering

The barrel you bought is perfect 1 in 8 twist. That will stabilize most bullets up to 160gr. Chambering,, from your two choices I would go with the 6.5x55. It really depends on what you want to do with it. If I were shooting 1000Ms I would want to go with the 6.5x55 ackley, but shorter distances the 6.5x55 is just fine.

Not exactly sure what I'm going to make out of it yet.Maybe a tube gun.We have been looking at some neat actions from Lakelander in Finland.
Might let my coworker and buddy GrensVegter do some of his magic and see what comes out.
Unless we get the new lathe in time I'll have Bill Crosby fit it.
 
I have been shooting a 6.5x55, off and on, for the last dozen years or so. I have used two different barrels, one Shilen, one Smith, both 8inch twist. I can drive 140's at about 2800 to 2850 and accuracy is good. Initially I shot the 6.5 exclusively for "F" class and I won quite a bit. I fool around with different things though and have not competed with it for the last 5 or 6 years. Co-incidentally, I have not won much in the last 5 or 6 years!
Seriously, the 6.5x55 is a fine cartridge. I throat a 6.5x55 match rifle differently than the standard chamber. I use a 1.5 degree throat with a .2645 diameter parallel leade. I make the throat long enough to allow the longest bullets to be seated ahead of the neck/shoulder juncture. I think this throat configuation works better than the standard European throat which is kind of a long funnel and is standard practice with the Mauser military cartridges and rifles.
