6.5x55 reload vs 260 reload

holy frig what kind of speed are you riping out of the 6.5 300 weather by i thought my 6.5 wsm was going to be a barrel burner

I shoot this cartridge on a regular basis, Hogden no longer makes H870 powder, which was one of the main powders used in this loading, so you'll have to find a substitute powder. WC872 and Accurate AA8700 (8700 is slightly faster than H870) are two good choices for powder. I use AA8700 and here is the loads that I use :

Target load: 78 grains AA8700 with 140 grain Sierra Matchking bullets and Federal #215 primers.
Hunting load: 76 grains AA8700 with 140 grain soft point bullets and Federal #215 primers.

I believe that Accurate has discontinued the 8700 powder, but you can still find WC870 which is a militart surplus powder, and you can use the same load data as H870 with WC872. AA8700 and WC872 are both spherical (ball) powders and do not erode the barrel like extruded (stick) powders.

This is the load data that I have for H870 and a 30" barrel:

82 grains, 140 gr bullet, 30" barrel, velocity 3,239, Winchester case
83 grains, 140 gr bullet, 30" barrel, velocity 3,309, Winchester case
86 grains, 140 gr bullet, 30" barrel, velocity 3,527, Winchester case

I hope this helps you understand!

I wasn't aware that you could get 86grains of H870 in a 6.5X55 case.
Can you confirm this and have yu actually SHOT that load?
I have used the 6.5X55 for a number of years, and never used H870 in it, let alone that much.
IIRC I used about 79 grains in a 7mag case with a 160 bullet, and that has quite a bit more capacity!

also you can use h870 for regular 6.5x55 but no not that much lol!!!! and actualy you wont be able to use any h870 for anything, unless you happen to still have some left, as hogdon no longer makes h870!

also i like the 6.5x55mm its a damned good round for use on just about anything that walks or crawls! some folks argue that the round isnt powerfull enough to go moose hunting with, but in my first hand exsperience, the moose sure as hell dont know the difference, because they fall down just as dead, as if they where taken with my .458 win mag!!! its about bullet placement, not just raw unbriddled power!

my 6.5x300 weatherby magnum, also makes one hell of a fun prairie dog rifle lol!!!!
you should see the little buggers when you hit them from 600 yards with the sierra matchkings lol!!!! they flip in the air about 4 feet, while they explode lol!!!!

also since i like the 6.5 i am thinking on getting an ar-15 upper, just dont know if i will do it in 6.5 creedmore, or 6.5 grendel, or just have an old cobbs industries ar in .30-06 rebarreled to
6.5x55mm lol!!!!

you said that ball powder doesn't eroad barrels as quick as stick.. is this true and any support to this subject?? that 30 ich barrel must be wild what is it built on? my 260 did 2940 with h414 (ball) but it was getting a tad hot but fun
