Anyone out there have any ideas on scout mounts for M96 swedish mausers?

I would like to make a scout style rifle out of a cheap sporterized M96. Is it practicle/possible/affordable to get a gunsmith to make some custom mounts? If not, is there someone out there who can recommend an aftermarket scout mount which attaches to to rear sight?

I realise that a true scout rifle should be in the .308 class of cartridges, as well as meet various other requirements, but I would like to attempt a scout project with the M96 as they are inexpensive and I like the 6.5x55 cartridge.

Has anyone else attempted something similar with success?

Any advise or information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your time.

I did one with a B-Square mount about 10 years ago. I found it hard to get a good cheek weld on the stock because the scope sat so high(in the lowest rings I could find). It was fun to shoot and quick to my shoulder. I think it would be better to skip the no-gunsmith mount and get it done properly. Good luck on the project.

I did a similar project on an 03 springfield in 30-06. I also used an aftermarket stock with a decent recoil pad.

I made a base that overhung the front of the receiver and then mounted the front of the base, drill and tap into the barrel. I machined the bottom of the base to follow the barrel contour. I don't remember the weaver base model, same that fits the encore single shots but it turned out decent.

I mounted a 2x red dot scope. no complaints.

My "Scout" rifle is on a 6.5X55 Swede Mauser, I removed the rear sight and sleeve and had my gunsmith drill and tap the barrel for a TC Contender weaver base, works perfectly. About $12 for the base and whatever your smith charges to drill and tap 3 holes.

here is the springfield scout. you could do the same with your 6.5x55...

Barrel is 20", in KG Gunkote Milspec OD on a Richards Laminate stock.

That is the easiest and best mount for stepped contour barrels like on the military rifles.

Thanks to everyone who posted a response. This forum is a amazing wealth of information and this helped me enormously.

Looks like I'll start on my own scout 6.5x55.

Thanks again.

Here's a couple pics of mine.

It was already bubbed when I got it. So I had the barrel chopped to 20", installed and bedded the cheap Ram Line tupperware stock, installed Williams rear peep and front sight, drilled and tapped for TC encore base and finished it with Brownells Bake On Lacquer.

I shoot Hornady 129gr Interlocks over 47.5gr's of H4831 started by CCI 200 primers in Winchester Brass, for an average velocity of 2650 fps.

Best thing about making a scout rifle out of one of these old mausers is the ability to use stripper clips for loading.

Hope this helps you out with your project.

hey Zulumike nice rifle you got there! 2 q for you

i like the sling, who made it?

It's a 2.5x Fitco that I got for about $50 when I was putting this rifle together a few years ago to see if I liked the Scout rifle concept. My intention has always been to replace it with a 2 3/4x Burris when this one quits doing everything I need it to, so far that hasn't happened.

I made the sling from an old C7 patrol sling I had laying around.

Nice lookin' rifle ZM. Always thought that 6.5 would make a nice scout. Lots of cheap bubbas kicking around, and like you said, quickly topped up with stripper clips. Think I'll go with a straight bolt though if I ever get around to building one.

The peep sight is an important part of the scout concept, don't forget it. I see Savage has brought back it's scout rifle. Nice to see it they are well put together scout guns.

thx for info ZM! the search for a cheap m/96 are on! not a hard task however since i live in sweden.

I have been quite pleased by the B Square mount - we put one on my daughters M38 Swede and have had no issues with it - three shots, three deer (2 x her). Upgrading to a Leupols LER scope this fall if I can find the time before hunting season!

Mount is sturdy, we had no shift in point of impact while sighting it in the early fall or over the hunting season. I would recommend one (I bought mine from a CGN member)
