6.5x55 Swede Or 8x57mm

Thats funny my 6.5's are minute of rabbithead at 100m. I personally would go with the 8mm mauser, as there is still surplus available for it

never seem to be able to get much better than 1 1/2 at 100yds but great cartridge fun to shoot.... had a winchester featherweight just could not do better

unless you want more guns, then buy BOTH, but really, you already have two guns which fill the same niches that either of these calibers would be in

I love my 6.5x55 for deer, but if elk moose or bear are on the hunting list for this rifle go for the 8x57. It is still a very popular cartridge all over Europe for boar, red stag, etc.

Come to think of it I think I may need an 8x57 myself

The 6.5 is very popular in Europe for moose. With premium bullets, it will definitely do the trick on any critter in NA. You can also get lighter bullets for smaller critters, down to groundhogs. It is very mild recoiling and a pleasure to shoot. So if you're planning on hunting for a variety of critters and doing some fun shooting, go with the 6.5. If, however, you are going to use it only for hunting moose or big bears, then I'd go 8mm or even one of the 9.3's.

Pretty much the same calibers in a European loading IMO. 30-06 or 8 X 57, pretty close, IMO
Same with 6.5 X 55 or 270.
As said, gotta reload to get the full potential out of Americanized loaded versions of European calibers

if you have a 3006 an a 270, basically you have a 6.5x55 and a 8x57 already...
If you just want a Euro calibre then pick you're favourite..


6.5x55 is a very very popular euro round, red deer,moose, deer.

8mm in a nice sporting rifle because its more unique. Everybody and their goat has a 6.5mm now. If i was you i'd get a 9.3x62 before they aren't cool anymore ( *no Hipster)

Another reason for getting these European cartridges is because you can find sporterized ones for cheap. Such as a m96 or k98k's.

They are excellent quality for the buck.

i love both cartridges. But i prefer the 8mm mauser since i grew up with one. For hunting rifles i only have 8mm mausers and 1 308. I will never look back to choose other calibers. I have lots of high qualilty military mausers made in to hunting rifles that look like thier worth more than a winchester. 8MM Mauser is all i use for big game hunting.

And the fat swede too.
I enjoy the swede for shooting.
Way more fun.
The numbskull I would take big fur hunting though.

I'm surprized that in four pages of postings no one has advised the obvious..........get both!! Seriously.
If you're buying surplus it's a relatively minor investment. Then you can tell us which is better.
I've played a lot with the swede and sporterized and sold several 96's it is a truly super accurate rifle-cartridge combo. Lots of good bulk bullets out there and fairly cheap to shoot.
No experience with the 8mm except to rechamber one to 8mm 06 and one to 8mm 300 Win.

The problem here is not the cartridge, but rather the platform you chose to use. Had 3 old feather weights (not pre 64), not one would shoot under 2" and I tried all the tricks The new ones are supposed to be better, don't know.

had 2 featherwieghts and some some 96"s...and even put a shilen barrel on one...worked with them for a few yrs liked the cartridge just no luck..had a few other calibers that did not pan out for me also but others guys did just fine...just the way it is sometimes but it keeps me shootin

i had a husky 96 in 6.5x55 that was either shot out or terrle made so i rebarreled and man alive that thing could shot. easliy a sub moa rifle. ugly as sin but who cares when it drives that kinda tack

6.5x55 is a perfect round in my opinion, well balanced, damn accurate, low recoil, many options if you reload, not much else to say!
