I am considering a rifle in this caliber, what can anyone tell me about it? I plan to hunt deer and possibly moose at reasonable ranges <250 yards. Thanks,

Patrick

Amazing cartridge - especially when you figure its been around probably longer than just about any current production cartridge (well over 100 years)

More than capable of killing anything in North America, and I work with a guide-outfitter that has hunted everything in BC including moose with the Swede.

As for 6.5 swede, low recoil, flat shooting, deep penetration, easily reloaded for, good for coyote to moose. I picked up a husqvarna 1600 in 6.5 swede early this year from trade ex. The quality it top notch. Smooth bolt, clean trigger, awesome grain in the stock. I'm getting 1.5" 4shot groups at 100y with irons, laying down, no rests with remington core lokt 140gr s/p.

I know 2 guys who have then and love them. They are incredibly flat shooting considering that they are"nt fast(great ballistics with the 6.5 bullet)
They are a real popular moose round in Europe, with heavier bullets.

There's really nothing to discuss..... those that shoot it, love it.

Go for it!

Search this forum and the reloading forum for "6.5x55" and you will find lots of threads and info.

Nobody seems to have a bad thing to say about this cartridge, it is very highly regarded for accuracy and game taking ability, along with light recoil. I was convinced enough by all the talk to buy a sportered M96 from Tradex to use for my first deer hunt this fall.

I love the 6.5x55 cartridge so much I'm slowly reducing my small collection of rifles to ones in just this cartridge. :)

Well OK I'll keep our SKS carbines around as well for fun cheap shooting. :D

As everyone here says... Get one. I have a 1914 Carl Gustaf and just fired it off this past weekend. Need to learn a bit more where the bullet hits but I love it. With full military hardware there's almost no kick and the sound of the shot is not that bad either. My cousin, after he took a few shots, has now dubbed it the ".410 of rifles" and I think he very well might be getting one in the future ^.^b Now I'm just looking for parts and bits for mine so that I can throw a scope on it and not take away from the value of my untouched all matching (except for the stock and buttplate) M96/38 @.@ damn my sense of keeping history whole ><

In a hunting magazine I was reading about popular American hunting cartridges, which of course where 30.06, 308, 30.30 etc, the writer had a comment on the 6.5x55 not been on the list, was that “In Europe the deer just don’t know that are not supposed to fall to a 6.5x55” a tong in cheek remark at how good that cartridge is and for some reason that it is not popular in USA. I love it, a great cartridge all round. Check on availability and cost.

Check out Tradeex ,they have a good selection.I've bought several 6.5x55's and 9.3x57's from them.Loading components, stocks, everything you need at reasonable prices and great service. With a little careful shopping and looking around you should be able to have a very fine rifle and a nice 4x M-8 leupold for about $400.Then all you have to do is hold it straight...and the moderate recoil makes that a lot easier than a big magnum

In my Gustav sporter the 160 gr Hornady Round Nose groups around one inch. Kills deer without spoiling a lot of meat. On a moose the bullet is found under hide on far side.

Kicks less than any other moose rifle.

I'll add to the concensus. The Swede will do as good a job with better accuracy and with less recoil than many "better" cartridges. The velocity does not require the use of premium bullets for it to be a good killer. The Swede is my idea of the lightest cartridge suitable for all North American game hunted under all conditions.

Husqvarna 1600 in 6.5x55

I put a Bushnell Elite 4200 3-9x40 on it and she's MOA easy at 100 yds. Took it on a bear hunt but no luck last fall.
