6.5x55 sweedish ? ( pics added)

6.5X55 is for sure one of the best North American calibers for all aorund use , I have seen moose drop so hard and fast from a 6.5 270-320yrds away , same with bears my black bear 300yrds 1 shot from the 6.5 through bothe sides shattering the shoulders , my fav all time caliber.

6.5x55mm

The 6.5x55mm is a supurb cartridge. Like it so much I just added two more rifles to the collection. One's a sporter Model 96 "Mauser Oberndorf" and the other is a Model 38 "Husqvarna" mfg in 1941 still in fullwood configuration.

Fine looking rifles there NAA. I have an M96 that I sporterized like the above, shortened the barrel, removed the rear sight ring, used an oil finish on the wood and installed a scope and timney trigger. Oh yeah, of course the bolt had to be cut and welded back on.

I just tried taking some pictures of my rifle with a digital cam, but it doesn't have macro and the picture was disgustingly blurry. I really like the look of the wood on these rifles. Anyone know what kind of wood they used?

Did the M38 come with a bent bolt?

Yes, I believe all the M38's made in the late 1930's, early 1940's had the bent bolt. The original Model 96's in the full wood long rifle version [29 1/2" barrel] and the short rifle version [24" barrel] had the straight bolt.

I bought myself a Tikka laminated stainless in 6.5X55 and it is rapidly becoming my favorite rifle. It is my most accurate hunting rifle. The load I use for hunting is 140 gr Hornady SST with 48 gr of RL22 and it shoots that well and performed very well on the 2 deer I got this year. Definately no problems with penetration and good expansion throughout. I'm thinking of trying it out for moose using the 160 gr Grand Slam. Most people who own them are very happy with the 6.5. It really is under rated in North America.

Hey NAA the one I just picked up looks like the top model in your picks and has the step in the barrell also from the conversion I guess and nice synthetic stock I will try to post a pick not sure how but those are beauties I can't wait to take mine out.
Thanks

6.5 * 55

I hunt with a Tikka M695 Trapper chambered in the 6.5 * 55 round and it is a sheer joy to shoot. I hunted for a few years with a sporterized M96 with both factory and homerolled ammo and the Swedes will drop deer and moose with authority. Very accurate and low recoil as well. With a minimum weight of 156 grains the round harvests 60,000 Elk (read Moose) in Sweden every year. Loaded with the lighter hunting bullets the round is a superb deer slayer. It works well with regular softpoints loaded to moderate velocities. It is easy to reload for and the components are available at a reasonable cost. Regards

60,000 Moose are harvested in Sweden annually???? What is the moose population like there?
Sweden have the highest population density of moose in the world, something like 300,000 compared to about 160,000 in Nfld. They harvest as many as 100,000 in some years but they breed like flies and the population doesn't show any signs of depletion. ;)

Wow! That is alot of moose! I learned something new here today.

That's the beauty of CGN. I learn something new here almost every day - and I still know virtually jack compared to some... :D

Oh, and yeah, 6.5 x 55 is a rather popular cartridge for dropping moose in Sweden... :p

That much I DID know.;)

I think it is one of the best all-around cartridges for the North American big-game hunter.

I knew you knew that! I was just getting back on topic, thusly:

Not bad for a cartridge originating back in 1891. I've got an (almost) all original Gustaf from 1920 that I don't want to hunt with, so I'll likely pick up a Tikka in this EXCELLENT calibre!

I used to buy Prvi Partisan from Yugoslavia for around $10.00 a box and they had both soft points and fmj with reloadable brass. I heard the factory got destroyed during their war.
Well if they were they weren't beaten.
Privi Partizan markets their product as Highland Ammo here in Oz and the reviews have been quite favourable here.
A friend bought a pack of the stuff for his 6.5x55 M96 sporter and it was quite accurate.
Plus their loads are built to SAAMI specs(more's the pity!) so you need have no fears about your M96 or M38 and even for Krags chambered to 6.5.
They make the following loads for the 6.5x55:
  • 123gn SP - 2625fps
  • 139gn SPBT - 2477fps
  • 139gn FMJ BT - 2477fps
  • 156gn RN - 2297fps
I use Privi Partizan cases in my 8x57 and they're fine.
Here's a link to the Highland site:
http://highlandammo.com
The coolest thing is that they make a range of obscure European calibres designed for doubles and drillings too like 6.5x57R, 7x57R, 8x57JRS and 7x65R.
They also make ammo and components for my desired cal 9.3x62.
All in all a good proposition as most of it is between $20 and $25 a box when RWS, Sako or Norma is approaching $50 or more.

As a footnote, Swedish moose are smaller than North American moose, being 400-500 kg max weight. Never shot a moose myself, but from what I've read on here, its always about shot placement, and not so much about calibre.

6.5 swede is a great caliber to hunt with! I have used it on many deer/coyotes/antelope with much success. Mine is a Rem M700 Classic, so I can stoke it up nicely. 120 gr Nosler at 2950 f/s. Not much difference to a 25-06. Easy to load for and lots of bullets to use. out to 250 yds the 154 0r 160 load would be devastating on moose, but then so would a 140 gr Partition!
