I was just given an old 6.5x55...I think it's a krag-Jorgensen. I couldn't be more unfamiliar with the rifle. On the left side of the receiver there is a little lever... Can anyone tell me what that does ?

Yes, that's the one...magazine hinges to the side. That's what I was thinking the lever was for, but I figured I'd ask. I'll have try it out, if I can find any ammo for it anywhere around here.

Does it have the hinged side load magazine? On mine, if it's the same as yours, I believe it stops the rounds from being fed up into the chamber.

Ah that thing is called "magazine disconnect". Or "cut off" of the image:

Most places here in central alberta carry 6.5 x 55 ammo the higher pressure stuff is normaly marked for modern firearms only

The gun is in real good shape. I'd say the stock is a pretty good homemade job. Only thing I don't like about it is it looks as if putting a scope on it is not an option.
The gun belonged to one of my uncles when he was 16-18, and he gave it to another uncle. He had it since then, and gave it to his grandson, a few years ago. Sadly he was lost at sea along with his 4 crew members in February 2013. His father figured it should be kept in my family, and gave it to me.

What's the bore like? If it's good it can be a great shooter. A friend and I each had one (a Krag) and with iron sights they were capable of 2" groups at 100 yds or better. I couldn't stand the noise from the 17 1/2 barrel on mine but my friend put a beautiful custom stock on his and turned it into great looking rifle.

You can put a 'scope on it but it would have to be a side mount.

The barrel looks like it is getting toward the end of it's career. The rifling looks like it's worn and rounded on all the edges. I did take it to the range today just to see if it would shoot straight at all. I really suck with open sights, not gonna lie lol, but once I got onto it, it didn't seem to shoot bad at all. I only played around with it at 25-50 yards, but the last 6 shots were all within two inches...3 were inside the 1" bullseye. It has the worst trigger I have ever seen though... I'd say about 10 pounds pull weight lol.

I'd say a good chunk of the condition of the barrel is due to very poor care. I'd say the last time it was cleaned was never. I was over an hour getting the barrel cleaned, and even then I couldn't get a patch to come out perfectly clean.

I think you shot pretty well with open sights, considering the type of target you were using.

For shooting with open sights, it is always best to use a target with a lot of black, with a centre of white. Squares or circles work the best. For shooting at 100 yards, you could go with a 4-inch black square, for example, and keep the centre a 2-inch white square. You should have no problem resting the black square on top of your front sight. If the light is good and your eyes are fresh, you might be able to rest the front sight at the bottom of the white square in this example.

The key to shooting with irons is to use a target that is easily seen at the distance you are shooting, and is sized just right to sit on top of your front sight.

This is how competitive shooters can make hits in a 10-inch circle with iron sights at 1,000 yards: They are using a gigantic black circle target which sits perfectly in their front sight -- they are not actually seeing the 10-inch centre at all.
