Anyone played with this cartridge?Looking for a set of dies for a friend. Placed an add in WTB and was wondering if 6.5x257 Roberts would work as well or are they slightly different?

I owned a 6.5x57 for a while, great cartridge in a 98 action
Very accurate and a good killer
I THINK they are very close and that you can neck down 7mm Mauser brass, I will have to check but I belive that is how I made mine, so necking up 257 Bob would not be an issue
Cat

They both have a common parent case when they were designed (7x57 mauser) but the final cartridges are different enough you couldn't use the 257 roberts dies for the 6.5x57

The dies aren't for me. Ron Smith approached me at the Torrington gunshow last weekend to help him locate a set as he's not a computer guy. Not sure what his build is as he already has a .256 Newton but at least he won't need a smith.

I have a MS chambered for the 6.5x57. Commercial ammo is available from a couple of the banner advertisers, SFRC and Intersurplus.

I believe they also carry cases.

The shoulder on the 6.5x57 is much higher than the 257 Rob and the 7x57 parent case. OAL is very close, depending on which blueprint you look at.

The 257 neck can be sized down easily and a false shoulder created. The case will have to be blown out during a fire forming session.

It's better to just purchase the loaded rounds or new cases and go from there. IMHO.

It's a great cartridge, especially when being used in a strong actions, such as the 98 Mauser, or MS, etc.

2800fps with the 140 grain bullets offered is easily doable without excessive pressures.
