A mate of mine down South is is involved in the manufacture and retailing of AR uppers etc in 6.8 SPC and he is considering expanding his business into Canada ( always a positive sign - Yanks wanting to do biz up here eh ). He was asking me what the Canadian market would be like for 6.8 chamberings. Now I haven't seen any 6.8 AR's at the ranges I go to but I'm no expert so I thought I'd ask you guys what you thought. Much market or better off sticking to .223\5.56 ?

Cheers,

Bob.

ARs in 6.5 would have some value. Excellent range performance, but 6.8, what's that good for. If you can't hunt with it, you're just paying more to punch holes in paper.

I'd be interested, IF there was a source of 'reasonably priced' ammo (say sixty to seventy cents or so a round...)

I'd also be very interested in a 6.8 conversion for my Tavor!!

6.8 SPC is a face palm dead end. 6.5 Grendel makes it look stupid across the board (velocity, energy, drop and wind drift) and you can get decent bullets in 6.5 unlike .270.

I just bought a 6.8spc conversion kit for my XCR-L with 95gr TTSX @ 2825fps it is awesome but my needs are for predator/deer/black bear hunting not endlessly blasting away at a club.

I like it so much that I am now thinking that I do not have a need for my 223 barrel any longer because I'll probably never use it again.

I am getting 4" or smaller 330 yards 3 shot groups in field conditions which equals dead anything I shoot at, a 6.5mm 123gr bullet @ 2400fps doesn't do anything for me.

So the .281 BC .264" 90 gr TNT is doing almost exactly what a .275" BC 90gr TNT 6.8mm is doing and with the BC's being almost identical their trajectories are the same.

Hornady list their 123gr factory loads @ 2400fps only way to get 2600fps is if your shooting out of a min 24" barrel.

Why is it a question about something becomes a debate on the merits of a caliber?

6.8 SPC seems to have caught on more the 6.5 grendel..

I am thinking my next coyote / beaver / dear gun will be the xcr in 6.8 spc. I so badly WANT an AR for hunting but uber wienie douche bags have screwed that up at the moment. Camp Cook is making the xcr look better and better, thanks for your experiences so far MR. C Cook

Heading out again Sunday night for the last 2 days of bear season.

Only taking two rifles with me a Rem 700 LSS in 375RUM with 260gr Accubonds @ 3020fps for long range if I see the monster red/cinnamon again that I am mainly going back for and the XCR with the 95gr TTSX @ 2825fps.

If I pull off a bear with the 95gr TTSX it will be the very first bear ever shot with that bullet in Canada and very possibly the first bear ever shot with an XCR-L...

I had a chance last time I was out got within 30 yards of the ugliest/mangiest bear I have ever seen in my life just couldn't bring myself to shoot it...

Tired of lugging my M1A up and down the hills all fall, I will be hunting with a 6.8 this coming season! Just bought a thousand rounds of brass and am having some 110gr 0.277 projectiles spun up by the machine shop so I'll have something to practice with before November!

Cheers,

Brobee

Might want to check into the availability and cost of ammo and brass before buying something you can't feed.

Well I really like my AR in 6.8 SPC. I am actualy on my second carbine (first one was in the M4 style, and went to someone who wanted more than I) and I have all the parts to build, a 20" hbar.

For Ammo, I have it on good authority that any dealer that carries remington ammo, should be able to order it in. It may just be a wait and see game. Last time I checked, Bashaw sports had a goodly amount, and said they would be able get more for those who were "prepared to put there money where theif mouth was."

From a reloading perspective.............

Bullets, are simply .277 diameter (yes the same as 270 win) from 90 to about 115 grains.

As for brass, last time I checked it was simply a phone call to Epps to get some, and they seemed to have no issue getting me the 1k I requrested, at a price far less than the $1.00 per peice of 6.5 grendel, and far less hassel then forming it for the 300 Whisper.

I like this cartrige, and it can simply be summed up as
"80% the power of 308/7.62, with only 20% more recoil than 223/5.56 Nato, all in an AR-15 footprint"

To be honnest I like and respect what this cartridge can do. Now I truly get tired of those who, in broad strokes, simply dismiss it out of hand, with out any first hand practical experience, either in shootig, feeding, or reloading for it.

As has been noted, the 6.8 SPC seems to be much more popular than the 6.5 Grendel (or what ever you want to call it to avoid paying royalties to Alexander arm). Thats because major manufatures are building carbines (Noveske, RRA, & Stag come to mind) and Ammo (Remington, Blackhill, and there are rumors about Hornady). The same can not be said for the Grendell.

We are all entitled to different opinions, and I support that. However my suggestion is don't knock it until you actually try it.

YMMV

AbH

Initial post was about bringing in ARs. To the AR Target rifle competitor 6.8 is behind 6.5 for drift, drop and bullet selection. To the CQB crowd a 5.56mm hole in Cardboard gets you the same points with less recoil to manage at a lower cost.

Then again there is always the people who buy stuff because it is new and hard to find.
