6.8 SPC good for a utility gun?

Okay, so I'm thinking about a new mini-14 in 6.8 SPC as a general utility gun. I like the .223 not being an expensive round but is not a choice if I ever want to hunt white tails. I like the .308 being a good heavy round, but am concerned about too much recoil, cost of ammo and being a little too much for small varmit hunting.

I have read many forums where ppl keep saying the 6.8 round is only good for close ranges, and how they are all unhappy with its ballistic proformance. But then I read this article:

http://coloradomultigun.com/misc/sgn_68spc.pdf

where the author specifically states "The 6.8 SPC shoots minute of angle or better at both 100 and 600 yards, similar in accuracy to the 77-grain Mk262 5.56 from the SPR."

Obviously I wouldn't expect this kind of accuracy from a mini-14 in 6.8 SPC, but what I am asking is will this round do what I need it too do?

I expect to do target shooting (shooting for vitals, NOT minute of angle) out to 300 yards (and out to 500 yards every few months at a military range), as well as possible varmit/deer hunting in the future using an aimpoint compM3-ish type scope. Cost of ammo is also a factor.

I guess what I am asking, would i be better off with a .223 or .308 as compared to a 6.8?

thanks for your imput

I just ordered bras an dies from Sinclair's , they can send 900 pieces in one order at a time.
The US military ordered 50,000 guns of 6.8 that might indicate something about that round. I think it's going to be good for me aroud my place, wolves an courgers are around in the winter.

"...US military ordered 50,000 guns..." That'd be for testing. It doesn't mean the cartridge will be adopted.
"...from Sinclair's..." As in Sinclair International? You'll likely get the dies, but brass and other components require the U.S. export permit. Got a source for bullets?

I must politely disagree, the bullets and brass export permits have been changed this year, you get get 900 pieces legally!

I spoke to the person taking my order for brass an dies an he told me about the 900 pieces per order.
I belive him an ordered accordingly.
I don't know where Sunray gets his info from but he should check a few times before he jumps in.

Accuracy has more to do with the gun than the ammo.

6.8 is just a 270 cal. It uses lighter bullets (115grn) than standard 270 bullets (130/140grn).

IF (big IF) ammo was readily available and cheap enough (priced between 223 and 308) it would be a great compromise cartridge. Heavy enough for light duty deer hunting and great for varmits. :shotgun:

I just got off the phone with Sinclair. I was told that the rules got changed again, and that the old "no export" rules still apply.:(

I just ordered from Midsouth 9.3 mouser, bras&bullets, no problem. But when I phoned a girl said their

policy is no shipping out of USA.
I have recieved my order from Sinclairs, fraster than gun from Epps??
The Post Office is slow!
