So in a nutshell, the heavy 280AI, mirrors the trajectory of the 300 Win Mag, gives about 10% more energy on target at long range, has 20% less wind deflection....and oh, about 25% less recoil in the same weight rifle

A 6.8 Western, with a similar weight bullet will be right in the same ballpark to the 280AI, since case capacity is just a smidge more than the Ackley. With a 7.5 twist barrel and a SAAMI 2.955" OAL, the 6.8 isn't hampered loading a potential bullet in the 190-200gr class. It will certainly outperform a 300 Win Mag, let alone a 30-30 Winchester

I really wish I'd been more aware of .280AI when I was first rifle shopping years ago. If only I knew then what I know now haha....

the SAUM's came out 20 years ago and basically flopped due to the superior velocity and marketing of the WSM lineup. The 7SAUM has seen a resurgence in the last while amongst custom rifle owners for both hunting and precision applications.

Lately you can't find even reliably source common chamberings like 30-30 and 30-06, let alone obscure stuff
 
Thanks for all the feedback folks. I like the higher delivered energy at distances and the ballistics that are better than my 270 win. I took the leap of faith I'll be able to find ammo by fall and ordered a rifle. If anyone knows where to source please let me know!

The SAUM's flopped because they were late to the party.

I picked up an XPR, still in the box as I now unexpectedly(thanks to work) won't have time to do much with it until spring. I will be in Southern Ontario for the rest of the year at least so the .277 could be handy. Looking forward to fun times ahead.
