#6 Birdshot vs. Bull Moose

I think you had a once in a life-time encounter. I would have been shaking in my boots, and I don't think the only crap on the ground would have been from a moose  but at that range you would have dropped him. You may not have killed him but he would have dropped never the less.

I do alot of butchering with a friend and we use a .22 to kill cows. properly placed, the .22 drops cows like a sack of s**t. At the range you are talking about, for self preservation, bird shot would definatley knock him down, and for a merciful finish maybe a couple more into the brain for good measure.

Excellent read!

From when I first heard his grunt to when he was just opposite that tree from me, he was coming my way, towards my sounds in the brush. I just didn't piece that together quick enough.

And Big_Redd I never said I was the quickest bunny in the woods nor the Sharpest.

I won't assume that you are Big and Red from your moniker name either.
No worries... just making an important point for the new guys... at your expense.
I have had a couple of close encounters of my own that were ill thought and could have ended badly. Trying to push a Cow away from her dead calf comes to mind  ... running headlong through the bush while looking over my shoulder and doing the silent scream

NOW THAT is a cool experience... Congrats on maintaining your composure and NOT shooting that moose...

I do think that at 7 feet it would have killed him with a shot to the eyeball region...

Cheers
Jay

An old timer showed me a trick years ago,I never tried it on animals mind you except for at the range out of curiousity. But he told me it was used back in the early days when most farmers had only a shotgun.
You take a shotgun shell(birdshot) and cut around & thru the case just above the brass. At "very close" range the whole top end wad & all is in a way a 'slug'.
It pulverizes  4L milk jugs with great effect.Fun to watch too :)
Of course I would never attempt to take an animal (except a goper) with this. But the old feller assurred me it was used effectivlely and brought home the meat.

Very hard on chokes and barrels... dangerous idea would be a better description

It had nil or no effect on the chokes,I've never heard of any BAD stories of injuries. If it was a dangerous idea, the idea  sure as heck stuck around long enuf

It would be a little hard to "manufacture" a slug with you pocket knife with a Bull moose breathing steam up your ass!!!! Much easier to carry some slugs and or 00 Buck in your pocket!!!! Make it a habit when you go bird hunting....

I had a real close encounter "20 feet" with a full size double-shovel.... I was sitting on my watch when the dogs kicked up what I thought was a deer in the dense underbrush... Crash, crash.... My blood starts to rush as I eased of the saftey.... To my surprise the crashing is getting closer AND head-on! There was a large boulder ahead of me obsurring my sightline... Then I see that "an big animal" is running out of the brush with peaks of horns over the boulder! I thought that it was the highest rack on a buck ever or.... Then he pops out and comes to an all stop on the trail!!! Looks right at me! Face to face.... My 30-06 scope is square between his eyeballs! I thought, My God, what if this rutting bastard takes unkindly to me and charges?! At 20 feet even if I kill him he is going to land on me, and probably gore me! Out of the other corner of my eye (naive thoughts here) I am eying a pine tree right beside me..... I quietly talked to him...."Big boy, you best be going.... Go on now...." He seemed to snap out of his transe and slid back into the brush..... After I lowered my rifle, I was shaking a little bit, I tell ya!  Looking back though, It was a real treat to observe such a beautiful animal up close..... I will never forget that....

My advantage over you was that I had my rifle! Other than that I would have been up #### creek!

bah, you weren't close to a moose, I was close to a moose, on sept the 30th this year, I got to 2 yrds froma small 2 1/2 yr old bull.

the kicker you ask?

his foot prints were 2 yrds from mine, except my arm was outstrecthed(bowhunting) and his throat, nose and rack were extended, so actually my arrow only flew for about 18", now that is close  , 7-8 feet feels like a football feild to me  :D

I got all the time in the world to practice with my pocket knife,it's a "what if" situation, say that particular day you don't happen to have slugs or buckshot!
You do it your way,
my .02 cents thats all.

SharpCdn,

the wind was right, I was wearing 3D leafy camo, and was crouching beside a rock, although it didn't help much when he walked around it to get to me

as I drew he spun, and thats when I nailed him, he ran close by me, but was parralle when he got hit, so he continued to run that way

I could here the air escaping and blood gurgling, he dind't even know he was hit, he just trotted away, and only ran 40 yrds

If it happened ata slower pace I probly would have, and definitly insane, bowhunting moose is like a drug, absolutly crazy!!!!

I have told this story probly 30 times in teh last 3 weeks or so, I havn't endulged any part whatsoever, we have on film the prints and my prints, allthough we didn't take a picture :(

I am quite sure some of the cows were bigger than the moose you saw..

I have yet to see a cow bigger than a full grown bull moose, but hey, you never know.....

We had a local trapper run over by a moose... concussion, broken wrist and ribs, and he felt lucky that was all.

"A buddy of mine from Deep River hunts birds alot with his lab always carry's the third round in his wingmaster a slug in case they come accross a bear. He lost a dog a while back bird hunting when the dog surprised a big sow with cubs, the bear was injured but his dog died."

I was born and raised in Deep River and can attest to the amount of bears around. When we use to go blue berry picking we use to bring the Mossberg 12 gauge with us just incase.
I had an incident with a cow moose 3 years ago during deer season around Deep that reminded me of this. Out of the corner of my eye I saw a flash of grey that was way to big to be a deer. I thought to myself "Oh great some idiot horse back riding without any orange on in the middle of deer season." Then I realised there was no rider and it was one ugly horse. Then the realization of, Holy crap it a moose and it's walking right towards me. It kept coming until we about 15 yards apart. I stood still and she eyeballed me for about a minute. I don't think she specifically saw me or recognized me as a threat because I stood still, but once the wind changed directions and she caught a wiff of me away she went.
