Hello hoping for a little insight into the 6mm remington cartridge is this a useful hunting round? I would be mainly using it for deer and moose. I have always wanted a falling block rifle and a browning 78 has come up in 6mm i had not even heard of this cartridge till now is it readily available or would i have to start reloading?

any input is appreciated.

It is comparable to a .243 making it a good deer round but could be used on moose but I suggest that you should use premium bullets and keep the range to 150 yards.

At one time 6mm rifles were manufactured with a slow twist rate that wouldn't stabilize the heavier bullets suitable for big game. I believe this is why the .243 won the popularity contest although I think the 6mm is a better cartridge. Frankly, if moose are on the menu, I think you should step up to a .270. If you can't shoot a .270 due to it's recoil, you won't have any better luck with the 6mm. If you insist on hunting game larger than deer or woodland caribou with your 6mm, use a good bullet like a Partition or a TSX, and keep the range moderate.

Edited to add . . .
Check out the rate of twist of the Browning 78, if its slower than 1:10 you won't be using it as a big game rifle.

I love the 6mm .just a great round with a lot of bullet choices .everything for yotes to deer and moose .I have been leaning toward the 260 for my next deer rifle Dutch

The 6mm started out as the .244 Rem with the 1:12 twist, and then was re-introduced as 6mm Rem. with a 1:9 twist in the early 60s.

I have a model 700 that is 50 years old, and it is still a keeper. Largest animal taken was a big bull elk at 70yds with one shot. I hand load, and I have a good supply of cases as factory ammo is scarce.

I have just bought a B78, 6mm Remington octagonal barrel, and have had a bolt action 6mm Remington for ages.
very happy with the B78, lots of fun and very accurate.
In a single shot the 6mm really shines as it can be hand loaded to full ability, its a bit strangled in a short action rifle, just slightly more powerful than a .243 and suitable for deer sized animals, better choices for moose.

I used to have a B78 in 6mm Rem. Fantastic little rifle - it had the light octagon barrel and oil finished stocks. The 6mm Rem is a necked down 7x57 (or .257 Roberts if you want to look at it that way) and has slightly more case capacity than a .243 Win.

The 6mm Remington is a great deer rifle. Mine has shoot about 40 deer, 12 antelope, 2 bears, and even 1 moose. But I think it is on the lighter end for bears and moose.
