I've ordered the stock and action, spoke to the guy building my barrell (told him i'd need one) havn't discussed details with him yet.
Question is, what do you have on YOUR 6 ppc for a barrell (length and twist rate) ?
What do you wish you had ?

Looking for input, thanks

A few questions

for you.

Is it for your own enjoyment or do you plan on shooting in 100/200 yard BR matches?

Whose barrel you thinking? action? stock?

If so you must meet LV @ 10.5 lbs and no more than 13.5 for HV.

Ideally it is best to know the weight of all your components excluding the barrel so you know how heavy the barrel can be. If weight of the gun is not an issue then do what you want for a barrel.

Most run between 20-22 inches in length.

Twist is 13.5 or 14 for bullet weights around 68 grains.

I have a Gaillard but really want to try a Bartlein or Krieger.

I would like the option to shoot matches, odds are it,ll happen this year .
I'll have to contact Robertons to get a weight on the barnard action I ordered and the H&H stock as well.
Barrell will be built near me at a custom barrell maker we use here.

I have a MacLennan barrel in 6BR. It's GREAT!

It is built mostly as a varmint gun with no need to shoot the heaviest bullets so I went 1:12 and 24" 5 1/2 Contour (or so). It handles up to 80gr bullets no problem. It's awesome in the 68gr range. Even 55's are wickedly accurate and FAST!

You'll have to get yourself in the (his) queue if this is who you are referring to - it may take some time - this is his BUSY season. Keep in touch with him.

Good luck - SD

waiting

I know I'll have to wait, he's usually fairly prompt with the stuff he builds for us. I've already spoken to Rob, he's told me he's busy and it could be about 8 weeks, but i need to make a decision on length and twist soon for the PPC.

I have one of his 6 BR's its 30" 1-8 , built for 107 SMK's

I've read somewhere that the common PPC length / twist is 20-22" @ 1-13.5" twist.

That's correct. If you can get away with 24, that's better in case you want to set that barrel back.

Better do

more homework. 22" is about top end length for a PPC.

This is one of them scenarios where short, fat and stiff is better than long, skinny and floppy.:D

Yes, the barrels come longer but they are cut down considerably.

Hi I also have a 6br Maclennan barrel. It is a 27 1/2 inch 1 in 8 twist and shoots .373 at 200 yds. I use the sierra 107 grn bullets. Not sure what contour it is. Screwed into a remington VS that used to be .308. Just thought I would stick my 2 cents in. Have fun.

After a quick search, it seems the 6mmPPC twist rate range is 1:13-15" - depending on bullet weight you want to shoot (faster twist for heavier bullets). The 68gr bullet seems to be the weight of choice for BR competition. There are some really good 68gr projectiles out there! For varmint shooting, it sounds like a 13-twist barrel will handle up to 75gr bullets (V-Max) - and would be the preferred twist rate.

For length, again, its a range between 20-22"....your choice.

What does Rob say? He'll have some good suggestions (OK REALLY good suggestions) as he builds LOTS of barrels and gets feedback on what works the best. I'm sure he will provide the best information - ultimately, the final decision will be up to you.

Have you thought about chamber dimensions?

Are you into turning necks? I didn't want to get into that so I had a no-neck-turn chamber of 0.272" for the 6BR. I'm really pleased with this choice.

How about powder? I've had really good luck with H322 in the 6BR and from what I see, it looks like a good one for the 6PPC too. I'm starting to fool around with Rx-7 too. So far so good.

I'm sure you'll end up with a great shooter!

Good luck - SD

Been breaking in the rifle with premade Diamond line ammo, it shoots fantastic but it's damn pricy getting 1/4 moa groups so far.
(under 1/2 " at 200 )

Planning on 107gr SMK's in front of VARGET for the 6 BR.
Thinking of something more exotic for the PPC and yes, i'll probably be turning necks. Reading that .263 ish is a common number. For the PPC if a little next turning will prove a noticable difference I'll do it.

I agree with bill, I don't know of anyone competing in light varmint or heavy varmint for that matter with a 26" tube. i think that 22" would be the norm. I bought one a couple years ago in light varmint (10.5 lbs.) that had a 20" barrel, sleeved model 600 rem. action, with a "brown" stock made by Nobi Uno and I bought it was because of all the goodies (extras) it came with. you know the old saying measure twice and cut once, well when you are investing major coin into a benchrest rifle, plan it out twice and get what you want.
