Almost a year ago I purchased a M14 which included to magazines, a 20 round magazine limited to 5 rounds and a short 5 round magazine which can actually hold 6 rounds. With the bolt closed, I cannot insert the six round mag when the mag is full, but the 20 round mag will fit in when it is full, so either way I can only have 6 rounds in the gun (yes I know I can only legally have 5 round magazines with this gun).

What do you guys think I should do with the 6 rounder?

I would bin it mate. Cos sure as God makes little green apples you'll get caught with it :( Unless you can open it up and sort it. The mounties wont give a crap that it was like that, they'll just hang you out to dry. Damn they might even send you to a "place in the sun" until you confess to all sorts of stuff :))
But hey....you might be lucky :)

Not even... put a rivet in the plate yourself, 2 second, 5 cent fix. Anything to block the mag is good.

Yep. But leave the original rivet in place, because otherwise someone might try to say you were "tampering" with it.

By putting in a second rivet, this would demonstrate that you went above and beyond to ensure 100% compliance, while you don't lose any of your investment in the magazine.

But yea, don't just leave it to hold 6 rds, if it came to charges or police examining it, they won't be loading it with ammo and then actually loading it on the rifle... "look, holds 6 rounds, centerfire rifle, semi-auto, original ammunition chambering, charge him with possession of a prohibited device"...or something along those lines.

and you'll never see it again- they use a marked STICK to depress the follower NOT in the gun- i've seen it done- so just stick something in there that only allows the follower to depress that far and pop rivet the floorplate- that complies with the law as well

yes officer,..it goes all the way up to six.

Now look here mister,........... that magazine has been clearly pinned to 5 rounds as per order in council of Canuckistan16.43 sub section 11A.457 and meets with Queens Cowboy's approval, of which I am a card carrying member. So there is no way it can possibly hold mo.......

....no,no man just listen,....:onCrack:...,it goes all the way up to six. Six man, ....it goes to six.....so I guess you can cuff me right here,..please the chrome plated one's you're wearing on the huge man belt;).

Do I get to ride in the front and maybe try the siren...................:p:p

LMFAO.........Scary thing is ,thats exactly whats gonna happen if you ever get caught with it. Youd lose the house defending yourself and its almost certain youd lose. Any attempt to rectify it would be seen as the total opposite by the Powers that be. Too risky for my blood.

Either bin it, or else modify it to make it a legal 5 round magazine. Mine came like that as well. I took the floorplate off and added a little bit of metal onto the inside of the case to block the follower from going all the way down, so that it would be limited to 5. A rivet would also do.

You can get the floorplate off by poking the end of a round into the little hole and popping the little catch up, then sliding it off. Once you've done that it takes only a few minutes to limit the mag, if you have a rivet gun, or access to any sort of welding process.

Or just bin it, and go buy a new mag for $35 or whatever it is they sell for, and be done with it.

OR...send it back to the dealer who sold you it and demand either a refund or a replacement that has the correct capacity. They really shouldn't have sold you one like that in the first place, but mistakes do happen.

Same problem, here's my fix. Disassemble mag, sand the finish off of the ends of the follower. Mix a small amount of JB Weld. Let it cure until it is a putty, stirring occasionally with a toothpick. Roll two little balls with your fingers. Stick the balls of putty on the ends of the follower and flatten them between your finger to elongate them. Let it finish curing, remoulding as needed. Good task while watching TV. After 24 to 48 hrs, test for fit. Sand the new ends down as needed.

Cheers,

TM

I also realized that I can switch the followers for the short mag and the 20 rounder to make a true 20 round mag. Of course, I immidiately switched it back to legal configuration.

that all depends on the WAY it was pinned- some followers have long legs and contact the floorplate after 5 rounds, others depend on that rivet to stop the downward movement- all mine have the long legs

I had the same thing happen to me. I opened the base plate and inserted a thick piece or plastic that sat flat on the bottom of the mag. I then carefully slid the base plate back on and, voila! a 5 rounder.

Technically still not legal, you need to weld or rivet metal so that it isn't considered easily removable.
