I have found a nice 50gr load (.25 moa or better) for my 1:12 223 and was wanting to try and work up a 60 or 62 gr load to see if they will fly. I know a 12 twist barrel is on the edge for that size of bullet but one never knows until you give it a go. I am wanting to do a little bit of 500 yrd plus shooting and the drift onthe 50 gr bullet is pretty bad.

Please, don't advise me to buy a 9 twist or better barrel. I love this old gun and a 9 twist is something down the road for me, or should I say, something that my other half needs to warm up to:)

Anyhow, anyone have any suggestions on a 60-62 gr bullet that is easy to get your hands on (and not too pricey)? I am in ONtario but not afraid to shop online.

I have loaded a Hornady 60 grain sp over just over 24 grains of WC735 and mag small rifle primers that have produced one hole accuracy at 100 yards. Inexpensive too.

60 gr Hornady Vmax should work very well in a 1-in-12 twist. They're a fairly short bullet, relatively inexpensive, and very effective on coyotes if you're into that.

Thanks guys. yeah I love killing coyotes! I use my 50gr Nosler load for that but want a 60-62 for some long range fun shooting.

I will give the 60gr Vmax a go.

Hi DsrRat,
Just came back from the range after reloading 24.5gr of Varget with a Armscor 62gr FMJBT bullet in a Win case with 450 primer and was shooting at a 15" rock at 535yrds (hit 5 out of 8 shots) was very pleased with this load. At 100yrds it was just average groups 1.75". Rifle was Stevens bolt 1-9 twist with a SAV-2 trigger.

Nice! I can asee 9 twist in my future. just way more options for bullets and loads. My honey load right now is a 50gr Nosler BT with 26.5 Varget, WIn case and CCI primers. Average group size is around .2 moa. Just wanting a long bomb round for fun.
