62gr .223 Bullets for AR and loads for same?

First, I see Mystic Precision has 62gr bulk bullets from both PRVI and Armscor. Price is similar, but is performance? They will be used in a Norc M4 with the 14.5" 1-9 twist barrel if it matters. Are these boat tail bullets or flat base? Anything else special or quirky to know about them? Any experience is welcome.

Second part, what are people using for loads with these bullets? I see a range of powders mentioned, including a couple of surplus WC powders (844 and one other I don't remember), H335, IMR4895 and others.

I am looking for a fairly economical load that is close to the M855 spec for plinking and not very serious service rifle competition at 100yds.

No experience with either bullet, but I'd wager a guess they are comparable.
I'd order both just to be on the safe side;)
Regarding the powder, there are so many that work well with .223 and that weight/size of bullet you are going to get a dozen or more recommendations. Higgenson's surplus powders have a good/excellent track record and the prices can't be beat.
 
A few years ago I loaded up some ammo for a friend, using Armscor 62FMJBTs from Jerry. IIRC I used WC845 powder. They made very nice, mil-look-alike ammo. My friend reported that it gave typical "blasting ammo" levels of accuracy, i.e. no worse that cheapy plinking ammo but it also wasn't a hidden 1 MOA gem either.
 
why don't you go with regular 55 gr if for plinking? higher grain bullets aint so stable in 1:9 twist rated barrels. millspec barrels are 1:7 to stabilize higher grain bullets like the m855 62 gr. ive used h355 with 55gr LC bullets and got pretty good results and all shot in my norc. make sure you crimp all your rounds. JMO

My Hornady manual gives service rifle loads for AR's up to 75gr bullets using a 1:9 twist, so I am not concerned about stabilizing a 62gr bullet with the same twist rate. I want to use heavier bullets because they are pretty much always the best choice at longer ranges and in the wind, and because I generally prefer heavy for calibre bullets overall.

62gr will work well in 1/9. I used them over Varget but the best I got was ~2" at 100 out of a bolt gun. I tried IMR4198, H335, and Varget. Varget worked best for me. I tried all these loads only because I already had the powder.

My limited experience with my 1/9 factory Rem 700 bullet choice; best all around was 60gr Noslers until a month before I swapped the barrel I tried 70gr VLDs. They were awesome. I tried 75gr Hornadys and had a keyhole. My best 200 yard group was with 53gr Vmax.

Bullet choice is huge for 1/9.

If your only playing at 100M then you won't notice much at all between the 55 and 62gr bullets, that being said when it comes to price you won't see much difference either between 55 and 62.

I picked up 1000 55gr Armscor from Jerry to sample in my Norc CQA, so far with WC735 and IVI brass I have been very happy with them shooting steel plates out to 300M... I do plan on switching over to 62gr later in the spring but it's simply to try and appease 4 rifles (Tavor, AR, XCR, Axis) with one projectile.


My economy plinking load for .223 is...

24.0gr WC735
CCI #400 primer
IVI brass
COL 2.255"
2750fps average thru a 14.5" Norc AR

Groups -2" at 100M with a 15 out of 20 hit average on a 12" plate at 300M with factory Irons.

Cost is approx $200 per thousand...
 
My 16" armalite 1-9 twist hated the 62 grain armscor bullets. I havent had the time but I plan on getting some other 62's to try to see if it's the bullet or my rifle. I am talking 4 moa off the bench. I have achieved 1.5 moa with 69gr and 55gr bullets.
 
FWIW, my 1:7 Noveske barrel didn't think much of the 62g Armscor either. It's a sub-MOA shooter with 69g and 77g; shoots most 55g decently; but for some reason doesn't like 62g. Didn't spend a lot of time working up loads for the 62g Armscor (W748), but it didn't like the 62g American Eagle factory stuff either. Guess the little princess only likes pricey bullets !!!
