I know about the Cooey 64 but what relationship are the other 64s out there? I see Savages and at least one other brand listing a model 64 or 64b. Is one better than the other? I remember my Cooey 64 was a bit of a princess and had to be torn down and cleaned after every hunt. The Savage looks to be pretty nicely decked out.

I know my Sears 64(C?) has a horrible pin holding the extractor(or is it ejector?) in the bolt in place that's a real PIA to remove and reinsert.
Minor changes would have taken place over the years to improve function & safety. Personally I don't need a safety button on the rifle, so improvement may be a subjective term.

Think it went Cooey/Winchester (after Hubert passed) to Lakefield to Savage.

M64 became available late 1963. Early models had plastic mag. Winchester introduced the 64A, B...

Where is Winnipeg Toymaker when you need him - he knows about these.

I have a nice Sears 8C version (if fellow told me NIB would have believed him).

Perhaps Sears 6C or 8C.

Likely extractor.

Oh yes, it's a 6c. I call it 64c so it doesn't confuse. A used rifle in VG Shape, originally my fathers now mine, will likely outlast the both of us. The fact that the rifle is still manufactured is great as any worn out parts are easily, except that stupid extractor, replace.

The extractors were held in by either a screw or a pin. the ejectors are usually attached to the left side of the barrel at the chamber and stay in the notch even when barrel is removed. the early 64 (original plastic mag, I have one) had a wire ejector that bent or got damaged when the barrel was twisted hard during removal..and converted 64 s that had the metal mag well and mag installed were called 64A. The Lakefields were 64B and Sears 8C were a 64C. Many more were produced under retailers numbers and names. I have 5 models and all are different in numbering .

the new savages are a Cooey copy with some "improvements"????? Not many of the new parts fit the old guns but a gunsmith I know makes several bolt parts( firing pins, extractors and ejectors etc. But CLEAN is the rule to keep them operating well.

What about those parts we ordered from Savage. Were those only for the older 64s? Or do they also fit the newer savage models?

The mag wells and mags fit Savage and Cooey. I do not know about the extractors and ejectors but the firing pin should fit. I do not know if the entire bolts can be interchanged .

Well I ordered from savage that time(like half a year+ ago if you remember) a firing pin, extractor, ejector, magazines, and mag well. Everything dropped into place except the ejector(on the barrel) which was not as flat as the original on spot which slides into the slot on the barrel so it took more effort to fit it. I expect that was just the original being worn down more then anything.

I'm looking at the parts diagram from savage and they list a heavy barrel and a receiver for the heavy barrel. I never seen a heavy barrel 64.

heavy barrel 64 - hmm interesting. Especially if it comes with receiver for it with solid attachment to one another.

Hmmm so just passing the flag as time goes on or 1 manuf drops it then. I kinda figured it was something like that. I am thinking of getting one as it was my first 22 way back in the late 60s. Once I learned to tear down and clean it was pretty reliable as long as I didnt put more than a couple of boxes of ammo thru it. FYI I used Imperial only and that seemed to work well. Sold my 1022 but would like to have a semi just for the fun of it especially since all the rest of my rifles do not require more than occasional maintenance. Thanks guys-much appreciated. Have a great weekend!
