I just brought home my new to me S&W 686 Plus, five inch barrel, with an unfluted cylinder. I have handled many, many, firearms in my life. But this gun just is magic. It feels great in my hand, it's freaking beautiful, and it just oozes firepower. I actually feel a little weird, I have never before fell in love with a gun. Liked a few a whole lot, but tonight is like a first date! Can't wait for the range!!

Don't blame yourself. You are not the only one who admires that gun. Last time I walked into Al Flaherty's to buy it, I ended up going home with her older sister, a Model 29. But I never forgot her. Soon, very soon...

I know how you feel. I had a 6 inch 686 years ago. Smooth, accurate and just plain fun to shoot. I put thousands of 125 gr JHP full house loads through it and it was still tight when I sold it.
Now you're making me think of it again!

You know somebody was bound to!:D

Here's a picture that the seller posted on the EE a while ago, it's not particularily clear though, and the gun is way cleaner and shinier than portrayed in this photo. It looks just like any other 686 with un unfluted barrel FWIW.

Very nice.

Out of curiosity, why did you go for unfluted cylinder? Is it just the looks or all the talk about it being "stronger" or other reasons?

Actually, It just happened to be a good deal when I was looking for an S&W revolver. The 686 Plus is a seven shot revolver, and I suspect the cylinder is unfluted to leave enough metal to space seven holes. At first I wasn't sure if I liked the look of the unfluted cylinder, but the more I look at it the more I do. From surfing some S&W forums I gather that it is relatively limited in production as well, which I guess makes it more of a "collectable", for what that's worth. I bought it for a shooter.

Same here I have an 5" fluted hogue grips and it fires excellant!! Both 38 and 357 the only problem i had with it was now I have to start loading 357 to keep it running!!! Just enough kick to tell you its there but it wont jump like a big 44!

Nice. Call Williams Arms in Port Perry for a Hi-Viz fibre optic sight. You will need a small drill bit to install it. I got mine from SB Simpson.

Mike Benedict at Talon Tactical can make up a kydex holster for the piece. Brownells will sell you a cylinder & slide extended firing pin to ensure reliable primer hits. Oh yeah, get some flitz to keep it shiny.

I think I almost bought that one, you must've beat me to it! Personally I like the look of the unfluted barrel but being 7 shot I don't think it was done for looks but to make it strong enough.

....The 686 Plus is a seven shot revolver, and I suspect the cylinder is unfluted to leave enough metal to space seven holes. ...

That could be Smith and Wesson's reason, but for me the only reason I like an unfluted cylinder is that it is much easier to clean powder and lead residue off of, compared to a fluted cylinder.

Especially after 700 rounds:D

IM_Lugger, Mattp33, sorry for scooping it, well not really, you know how it is lol! Keep your eyes open, I'm sure you find great pieces as well. Thanks for the compliments on it folks. Can anyone tell me where I can find Flitz (I assume it's a polishing paste)? Has anyone tried Solvol Autosol?
