Hi to all the long range shooters out there. I finally loaded up some 105 gr. target Bergers for my 6BR. Went out last night and did three, five shoot groupings.
What would be an average 5 shot grouping that one should expect to obtain at 500 yrds. Going one step further what goal would one want to achieve for a group size at that yardage?
I will post my results if the feedback deems them postable:)
Thanks and look forward to your replies.

Depends on what you are shooting in/at/for

In an F-Class gun, with a good barrel, a tuned load and top notch shooter, in good conditions, well under .5MOA is possible and frequently achieved.

The Match Target and VLD bullets have less BC than the Hunting Match bullets...

Hi Ian, thanks for the response. To be more specific:
Yes, using an F-Class gun
Good barrel - yes, you sold it to me :D
A tuned load - no idea what to look for in regards to tuning? I guess that is why I started this thread :)
A top notch shooter - not likely. I've only shot @ 500 yrds a couple times
Good conditions - last night was perfect - no wind and suprisingly no misquitoes:eek:
Regarding the bullets - I was using: Berger Target VLD Match Grade. The box states the BC = .532
Are these the bullets of choice? I purchased some VLD Hunting bullets as well. Can I expect these two bullets to react the same?
Of the three groupings last night here is my best one:

Coincidentally, my first group was the best. Lack of shooting skills certainly was apparent.
My second group = 1.320"
Third group = 2.037"
First group load = 30.5 gr. of Varget with a COAL of 1.690"
Second and third group = 31 gr. of Varget with COAL of 1.690"
What are my tuning signs? Where do I spend my efforts for improvement?
Thanks

Yup, awesome and no vertical to speak of (edit, guess I was looking at it sideways, but still just 1 out of the tight group). ENGRAVE that load data on your bench LOL. Nice shooting!

6mmBR is so easy to load for. And where-ever you got those VLDs with the BC of 532 go buy em out. You can't get the VLD with that BC anymore. The new ones are 493. I bought a pile of em when they were 560, those are long gone now.
If you can't get the same VLDs look for the hunting VLD, they are 532 still or Lapua Scenar which are 530.

If those are 500 yard groups, quit tuning your load!!! You're there! Nice job!!!!!!!

As to bullets, Large Legume is right. These bullets are no longer made. The new Hunting match bullets are the same thing, and by many accounts they are more consistent. They are what Berger used to call a Target bullet, but when they started making bullets with thick jackets, they changed the name of the original bullet to "Hunting Match.

Unless lapua has comletely re-designed the scenar recetly (Since the book "Applied Ballistics for Long Range Shooting") the Lapua scenars only have a real G1 BC of .484. That puts them right at the bottom of the BC pile in 105 bullets.

So thats its then, load and go for a 6BR - no tuning required, hard to believe that I hit the jackpot on my first loads:eek:. What a sweet caliber to load for:D
By the sounds of it, this rifle is accurate to say the least - looks like I'm going to have to investigate on the F-class sport.
Can anyone give some direction on how to play the game and where to.
I live in southern Sk so I'm pretty sure there is nothing real close for me.
Thanks for the replies and may run into you some day at an F-class event.

You're there!

Anyway, the SPRA is a good organization and they have a range at Nokomis. We are winding down the shooting season with fall around the corner, but drop me an email and I will give you Keith S' email address (He also goes by Kodiak somthingorother on this board) . he would be a great guy to get a hold of about coming out and trying F-Class.

You did things right with your choices so far, and you now have a very accurate gun! That gun will teach you a great deal! Accurate guns make accurate shooters.

If you are interested in making a bit of a road trip, the APRA has a fantastic F-Class match from 300M all the way to 900M on the first weekend in October (Just west of Calgary). You will meet lots of great guys there from BC and Alberta, and I think you will find them a pretty welcoming bunch of guys.

Welcome aboard!

Ian

That shooting you've done there, well it hurts my feelings.
Hate to say it, but I hope to continue to hurt your feelings:p
My fear is I will not be able to duplicate the results - can't wait to give it another go to see if I can mirror my original groups:D
My other fear - wind:confused:

Wind is tricky. But the 6mmBR is consistent even in wind. I am far from mastering the wind but I have found that I can still do well in the wind once I figure it out. Its a bit of a guessing game for me. I always marvel at the guys that kinda guesstimate the correction for the wind almost perfectly everytime. Usually takes me a few rounds to get it close.

My second group shows a vertical grouping - what does this mean exactly?
Thanks
