I recently finished my 6mm-06 build and want to start working on some loads. I hope to use one of three bullets (85gr tsx, 90gr accubond, or the good old 100gr partition) but would like some advice on powders.

I am hoping to hear from the guys with actual chronographed results.

So, to you guys shooting one of these 6's what have been your experiences:
1) favourite powder for maximum velocities?
2) favourite powder for best accuracy?

Thanks in advance

Typically for grossly overbore cartridges, you'll tend to get top performance from slow burning propellants. I wouldn't consider powders much quicker than R-19 for big game, and H-4831 and R-22 will be better yet. I wouldn't be surprised if H-4350 produced much more than .243 Winchester velocities before you observed pressure, but, I bet its very accurate.

I tried a couple loads with both RL19 and 22 using 240wby loads. The RL19 gave pretty much spot on book velocities, while 22 was behind about 125fps - which surprised me.

Thanks for the info.

I had planned to go 1-8", however I chanced upon a barrel that was the right profile and price with a 1-9" so I used it. I guess we will find out if it was a mistake.

DG, not near my data right now but expect to be there within a week or 10 days, I should have lots of data for the 6-284 and if memory serves got some impressive results with IMR 7828 with the 80-95 gn bullets and RL 25 with 100-105 gn bullets. You are going to find Retumbo too slow for this bore to case capacity. RL 25 is also magic in my 257 Wby, I also remember having good velocity and superb accuracy with 80 grnrs and H4831.

With the completely different case shapes it's hard to say if the powders the 284 case likes will also be the powders the '06 case likes.

Your 1-9 twist will be absolutely perfect for the heaviest 6mm bullets at these velocities, I would not have gone 1-8 with that much case capacity, it's not needed and all it does is drive up pressure and reduce maximum velocities. The 243 adequately stabilises 100 gn spbt and 105 fb bullets, you will be good to at least 115 gn bullets with that case and maximum loads/velocities with a 1-9 twist.

Thank you Sir, all good things to hear. I just found some 4831, so I will try that and see what happens. I don't think I have unrealistic goals (velocity wise) but would like to see a significant gain over my 243 to make it worth while.

What do you think of the 100gr partition at these speeds for deer/antelope?
